Welcome to an out-of-this-world journey through our solar system! In this interactive lesson,students will embark on a journey to understand how changes in technology have impacted science learning through reading, hands-on model manipulation, projector visuals, model building, and newer technology like MERGE Cubes.

Students will learn a new vocabulary word - Responsibility.  Read a story about some responsible bugs and then brainstorm ideas for being responsible at home and in the classroom.

Technology has changed drastically - from smartphones to virtual reality. In this lesson, you will review the main types of Simple Machines.  Through class discussions, your students will compare how both technology and simple machines have changed and are used differently than they were in the past.   Your students will then explore and build examples of modern-day machinery. 

Students will use their understanding of password security to create a model of the layers of the Earth. Each layer essential to our Earth’s systems and processes just as the components of a strong password are important to enhance cybersecurity. 

Everyone loves rock candy, especially fifth graders. Have students engage in a sequenced investigation to discover how adding heat to a sugar and water mixture creates a solution. Students will be amazed as the solution cools and forms edible crystals.

Overview of the activity:You will learn about the culture of Mexico and Spain, and take a VR QUEST virtual tour of Mexico and Spain. Then, you will be reading about and researching a Spanish-speaking country. You will collaboratively link your research into an Interactive Map, creating a single interactive class presentation document. As a culminating activity the class will be experiencing the culture of Mexico, Spain, and the countries by doing Green Screen photos in traditional clothing, and by having a food-tasting day.  

Students will learn the basic parts of a desktop computer through the hands on building of an air dry clay model. Students will have to label the parts of the computer by placing toothpicks with small labels on them into the model at the appropriate place.

Students will gain experience and knowledge using technology while learning. They will learn how to solve their tech problems and learn about the pumpkin life cycle!  

Students will learn the process of the scientific method by using whole group interaction. Students will get a front row seat at learning the steps in the scientific method process. They will learn to use their scientific method checklist to make predictions on what they think will happen when you conduct the three different experiments. This can be used over the course of one week.Day one: hedgehog experiment Day three: volcano experiment Day five: rocket launch 

Students will view a whole group video about responsibility and we will discuss being responsible with various things such as information, technology, and classroom items (the sensory items) We will also discuss taking turns and sharing, etc. Students will then be split into 5 groups and rotate through various sensory items. These items include a calm down corner, stretchy fidget strings, pop it squeeze balls, multi colored quiet fidget toys, and slow rising squishy balls. Throughout these rotations, the teacher will remind students of the responsible behaviors expected.   

Students will be able to explore the different types of soil by planting and monitoring their own plants!  Using the soil book, soil kit, and different soil, the students will have hands-on experiences learning about soil.  Dive into the different soil types and allow your students access to expand their knowledge using creativity and hands on experiences!
