This instructional plan will provide the instructor with the outline and resources to guide students in the composition of original music. Composition incorporates different aspects of music education including creativity, critical thinking, and the application of musical techniques.
Students will explore copyright and intellectual property standards as they relate to music, music technology, and digital citizenship. Students will identify and apply their knowledge of copyright law and licensure to select appropriate licenses for an original work. Students will then analyze copyrighted material and understand how to obtain appropriate permission to use the material.
Students will investigate ways that choral music can influence the community. Using project-based learning, students will research organizations in their community to be the beneficiary of a benefit-type concert. Students will select level-appropriate repertoire and create advertising. This project is imagined to be used for collaborative small groups, but could be adapted to work as an individual project.
This plan introduces students to the “feelings wheel” concept and leads them through developing their own emotional interpretation of specific works, themes, and articulations. A theory of emotions first articulated by American psychologist Robert Plutchik allows emotions to be arranged like colors on a color wheel.
This plan will introduce students to a clear and consistent method for practicing and performing sight reading. Students will evaluate and assess sight reading of their peers and gain experience in listening and error detection.
The exercises in this plan are designed for students to exercise improvisation skills and creative thinking in dance movement. The exercises could be used as warm-up activities, or could lead to a larger choreographic project. This instructional plan is designed to be used in parts or whole.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of rhythmic literacy by playing Disappearing Rhythms. Students will identify and perform simple rhythms, and improve audition skills, as well as accuracy and fluency of rhythmic music literacy, through repetition in a fast-paced environment.

This unit of study allows for students to gain understanding and confidence in figure drawing over a series of 3 separate lessons that result in a collaborative mural. These lessons can be used to facilitate an assessment of student growth and skills development, while still encouraging expression through different types of art explorations and working both individually and collaboratively.

This plan will outline the process and resources needed to introduce and improve improvisation in an instrumental classroom. Improvisation is important for encouraging creativity and expression while providing a supportive environment that is free of judgment and criticism.
Students learn communication and collaboration skills for theatre with improvisation games. Once games are learned and practiced, improv teams are formed and opportunities are given for students to perform for a live audience.
Students select an instrument and identify instrument’s origins, composers and musicians who feature this instrument, and styles of music where this instrument is featured. Students will also identify the parts and sound science of the instrument.
During this lesson, students will explore concepts related to animation while creating a moving image using ideas, subject matter, and materials of their choice by designing a functional thaumatrope.
Students will learn basic acting and improvisation skills through different activities. Students will be able to identify and use learned acting techniques during improvisation games through imaginative play.
Students will explore how music reflects history and culture through study of the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Students will closely examine the lyrics to explore the song’s history, current events, how it came to be known as the Black National Anthem, and learn to sing the song.
Students will take on the role of a graphic designer and create a logo for their dream business relying on symbolism and imagery over text. Students will use linoleum printing methods to print their business logo on multiple surfaces - shirts, bags, paper etc. Utilizing printmaking allows students to see the benefits of using this media when reproduction of a design is desired.
Students will experiment with various light blocking materials and how they affect creation of shadows. Using this knowledge, student will participate in a series of activities manipulating and capturing shadows to inform their own work creating a 3D sculpture that casts a unique shadow.

Students will explore and identify the basics of melodic direction using aural skills and body percussion or movement. Students will compose their own piece of digital music using stepwise and leapwise melodic direction.
Students will compose short melodic phrases using commonly found household items, such as a rock to create “Melodies that Rock.” Students will explore music contour in relationship to high and low notes, and melodic patterns and motion.
Students will learn that a mistake is an opportunity to be an artist. Students will first close their eyes and make an unwanted mark on their paper, then use a variety of art supplies to turn that “mistake” into a work of art. By problem-solving, students will explore solutions that may take the form of animals, objects, places, or non-representative art.
