Evicting the Writing SOL: Body Paragraphs

This resource is a remix of Margaret Harris-Shoates' original source. The paragraph following this one and the accompanying PDF are hers. The paragraph after that and the accompanying PDF have been provided by Bryan Harvey (apologies for referring to myself in third person).

This resource is a quick reference guide for students as they develop body paragraphs in response to persuasive writing tasks, such as the Writing SOL Short Paper. The resource includes various strategies that students can use for elaborating on ideas and exemplar paragraphs based on a released SOL prompt.

This second resource is an addition to the original resource. This PDF walks students through argumentative paragraph structures. The PDF includes a cited paragraph from Matthew Desmond's 2016 book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City. From reading the brief excerpt, students and teachers should be able to identify the parts that went into making his argument as well as how he structured, or arranged them. The terminology and strategies here are probably most compatible with teachers who have or are familiarizing their students with the five canons of rhetoric. Also, it should be noted that Desmond's book  is an excellent resource for teaching ethnographic research skills and products, which is what most of the book contains until he draws his conclusions in his Epilogue, which is worth excerpting on its own merits.
