Description: Students will understand the difference between weak and strong thesis statements and will be able to incorporate this knowledge into their writing.

Objective:

  • The students will be able to create strong thesis statements that introduce an argument
  • The students will know the difference between weak and strong thesis statements
  • The students will use peer revision to make their writing stronger

Essential Question: What qualities make a thesis statement strong?

Procedure:

  1. The teacher will give a presentation over strong, broad, and narrow thesis statements. The presentation will include an activity where the students determine which category a thesis statement falls into.
  2. The students will write a thesis statement in response to a writing prompt, applying what they have learned.
  3. The students will share their thesis statements with a classmate and provide feedback to each other.

Product or Assessment: Students will complete a writing assignment based on the revised thesis statement to be peer reviewed and submitted to the teacher.
