Biochemistry Review

Background and Use

This resource was written as a pre-test for my AP Biology students to see where they were coming into my class at the beginning of the year in terms of biochemistry background.  All of these terms are essential for understanding of the rest of the class, so it plays a major role in setting up students for success.

The file is attached as a word document, and you may change it however you like.  They key is not included with the resource.

Terms

It consists of 22 biochemistry terms to be matched with 22 definitions.  The layout in the document is such that it all fits onto one page.  Here are the terms:

2.    phospholipid

3.    nucleotide

4.    hydrophobic

5.    glycogen

6.    chitin

7.    starch

8.    isomer

22. glucose

  1. glucose plus fructose

  2. macromolecule consisting of covalently bonded monomers

  3. term used to describe molecules that have a carbon skeleton and some hydrogen atoms

  4. monomer of DNA and RNA, consists of a 5 carbon sugar, a nitrogen contains base, and a phosphate group

  5. type of bond that holds amino acids together

  6. type of lipid that has four interlocking rings, examples are cholesterol, estrogen and testosterone

  7. molecules with the same molecular formula but different structure, and therefore shape

  8. polysaccharide that makes up plant cell walls

  9. insoluble in water, repels water, "water fearing"

  10. a common monosaccharide

  11. in animals, long chains of glucose used for energy storage

  12. type of fatty acid that has all single bonds (making them solid at room temperature

  13. an important component of cell membrane

  14. class of organic compounds consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, includes monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides

  15. in plants, long chains of glucose used for energy storage

  16. composed of one or more chains of amino acids

  17. milk sugar

  18. polysaccharide that makes up the exoskeleton of insects

  19. the splitting of a compound by the addition of water

  20. the number of electrons in carbon's outer shell

  21. organic catalyst, usually a protein molecule that speeds reactions

  22. synthesis where water is removed and two organic compounds bond together
