MLB Strikeouts & z-Scores Task
AFDA.7 The student will analyze the normal distribution. Key concepts include
a) characteristics of normally distributed data;
b) normalizing data; interpret and compare z-scores for normally distributed data
c) percentiles;
Select a position of your choice (C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF). Use the Major League Baseball Site or other relevant sites to research the number of strikeouts each position player from each team (one per team) accumulated during the 2019 MLB season. Create a table to organize the data.
1. Calculate the mean and standard deviation of your data and explain which players are not within 2 standard deviations of the mean.
2. Who is your position player from the team of your choice and what percentile is that player in?
3. List the players on the team of your choice that have a positive, negative, or zero z-score and explain why is would be better to have a positive or negative z-score.
4. Compare your results with another group who chose a different position. Identify any similarities or differences between the data.
5. Explain how a General Manager of a baseball team could implement this data towards improving the team.
