Material Type: Lecture Notes
This lesson will teach students key vocabulary needed to understand computing systems. The lesson starts by showing a video to introduce key vocabulary terms. Then, teacher and students will have a class discussion to review components of a computer, hardware/software and input/output, and how to resolve problems when using a device. Teacher will facilitate a Kahoot, and students will answer each question individually to review material learned throughout the lesson. To wrap up the lesson, students will be asked to complete an exit slip by matching pictures to the correct terms (hardware, software, input, output).
Material Type: Activity/Lab, Assessment
This exit slip should be used after teaching computing systems vocabulary to check for student understanding of concepts covered.
Material Type: Activity/Lab, Assessment
Students and the teacher will work together to complete the Computing Systems Kahoot. Students will complete the Kahoot in a whole group setting, but will have their individual chromebooks to work from. The teacher will read the question and answers to each Kahoot, and students will select the correct choice on their individual chromebooks. As each question is completed have a whole group discussion about the correct answer choice.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
This lesson will teach students key vocabulary needed to understand computing systems. The lesson starts by showing a BrainPOP video to introduce key vocabulary. Then, the teacher and students will have a class discussion to review the components of a computer. After reviewing, the teacher and students will work together to label the parts of a computer and discuss each component as it is labeled. To wrap up the lesson, the teacher and students will continue to review the computer components by completing the computing systems matching game.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Students will collaborate with a partner to create algorithms for classroom routines. They will create an illustrated anchor chart for all of the class to follow these algorithms.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Students will program the teacher (robot) to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This will provide an opportunity for students to learn that robots (and computers) need to follow very specific instructions to work correctly. This lesson could then be extended into letting the students try to create algorithms for daily classroom routines or any other step by step process.

Material Type: Lecture Notes
Students will read the article about the computer helped land the Apollo 11 compare to a modern day cell phone to see the information about how technology has go greatly changed.
Material Type: Lesson
The purpose of this lesson would be to review polygons and explore the turtle module of Python. Students would see firsthand what turtle can create and then have time to try and write their own program.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
The goal of lesson is the be a review activity for the following standards. Computer Science: 2.5 The student will compare and contrast a group of items based on the attributes or actions of each item, with or without a computing device.Mathematics: 2.13 The student will identify, describe, compare, and contrast plane and solid figures (circles/spheres, squares/cubes, and rectangles/rectangular prisms). After a whole group review students will create a digital digram or video comparing and contrasting plane and solid figures.
Material Type: Activity/Lab, Assessment
In this lesson, students will begin to recognize how computers transmit information. Students will participate in a traditional telephone game recognizing the transmission of sounds, then students will gain an understanding of different ways to share information on devices. Email will be the focus as students will learn proper email etiquette and then students will practice sharing emails with different people in their classroom or community.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Students will warm up by participating in a Kahoot to see how many logos to online communication they recognize. The students will review electronic communication they were taught in first grade, email and social media, and be introduced to blogs and video conferencing as additional ways information can be electronically communicated.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Students will use a familiar method of communication, writing, to understand the purpose and potential uses of an electronic method of communication- a blog.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Students will construct an information network for a new town using train tracks. This will provide an opportunity for students to learn what a network is through a visual representation using a train and train tracks.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
In this lesson students will think about the many uses of technology in their own daily lives. We will also discuss how technology has changed through the years. Next, we will discuss technology's purpose and how the goal of technology is to make our lives easier. A google slides presentation has been included to help explain these concepts. Activity: Students will get a chance to compare and contrast a task both using technology and doing the same task without technology. Students will compare the differences for sending a message using technology and sending that same message with pencil and paper.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
In this lesson students will be introduced to essential vocabulary surrounding digital citizenship and digital safety, they will learn what is appropriate for online behavior and what types of personal information is safe to share online. Next, students will create their own poster explaining what responsible online behavior looks like and what kinds of information is safe to share online, this product can be created both digitally and/or on paper. The idea is to do the rough draft on paper and then create their poster through a digital format, however, depending on teacher preference, it can be done paper and pencil only.
