Material Type: Teaching/Learning Strategy
The environmental science content guidelines are inteded to provide content guidance for the instruciton of environmental science. The intent is that these guidelines become standards during the next revision cycle.
Material Type: Unit of Study
This lesson is intended to review 6th-grade content on watersheds, estuaries, and wetlands. It also introduces abiotic and biotic factors of ecosystems found in VA's Watershed. Students investigate the Chesapeake Bay using several resources with a pre-assessment, video clips, current article links, post-assessment, final evaluation, and rubric. A student sheet, teacher key, and google slide were created to use for face-to-face teaching or virtual learning. Click on the attached to access the folder.
Material Type: Lesson Plan
Students will create an informational poster, collage, slide show, cartoon, or video clip of a specific ecosystem in our watershed. Requirements are as follows:pick a specific tributary, estuary, or wetland. show at least 4 abiotic and 4 biotic factors plus the location that you choseinclude 4 or more pictures to help show the parts of the ecosystem. cite the sources with the website, title of the site, author, and publishing dateA rubric is included
Material Type: Assessment
Students will analyze data from the "State of the Bay" reports from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation while reviewing and completing the scientific method. The final assessment is a mission for students to create a persuasive speech or advertisement that will call for action to make changes that will positively impact the watershed with reasons why change is important.

OVERVIEWThe purpose of this lab activity is to help students develop a better understanding of the layers of Earth’s atmosphere. Earth’s atmosphere is composed of thin layers of gases that protect the planet and its life forms. The students will work in small groups and combine different liquids that will stay separated because each liquid has a different density and therefore relates the concept back to the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Overview: I created this lab activity to provide my students with a fun way to learn about the components of the atom. Students will investigate and understand that all matter is composed of atoms. Key ideas include atoms consisting of particles including electrons, protons and neutrons. This activity will be done after the introduction of the Periodic Table of Elements. This activity uses Playdough which is and always will be a favorite among kids. This activity provides support for SOL 6.5a in which students are expected to create and interpret a simplified, modern model of the structure of an atom.
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Overview: I created this lab activity to provide my students with a fun way to learn about the components of the plant and animal cell. Students will investigate and understand that all living things are composed of one or more cells that support life processes, as described by the cell theory. A key idea includes that the cell structure and organelles support life processes (SOL LS.2b).
Material Type: Activity/Lab
Overview: I created this Lesson Plan to help students learn about how to read weather maps. Weather maps give basic information about fronts, systems, and weather measurements. Weather maps illustrate the weather conditions for an area at a given time. SOL 6.7f states that students are expected to interpret basic weather maps, including the identification of warm and cold fronts. Also, students are to map the movement of cold and warm fronts and interpret their effects on observable weather conditions.Prior to this lesson, students should have already been introduced to weather tools, cloud types and types of weather.

I love this activity, and I think it is a great instructional resource for students to learn about atomic structure and counting atoms in compounds. However, I would like to add a single modification.MODIFICATION: Add the following question: How are atoms of one element different from the atoms of a different element? This resource is designed to accompany students notes, texts, and other instructional resources and provide a means to review what they have learned about atomic structure and counting atoms in compounds.
