Talk About Your Favorite Food - Interpretive Listening

Talk About Your Favorite Food

Interpretive Listening

The external resource for this activity can be found here: Spanish Proficiency Exercises: Talk About Your Favorite Food

This resource would be best used in a Spanish level 2 or 3 class where students are learning how to talk about food. In the linked resource above, native Spanish speakers are individually talking about their favorite foods (dishes, individual foods, etc.) and sometimes refer to their origins. Follow the instructions below to turn them into an activity:

  • Make sure basic vocabulary has been introduced: food and popular dishes in the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Use a graphic organizer such as the one below to guide students through the video clips:

 Ingredientes     Plato(s)                Origen                   Información adicional

  • Guide learners through a practice one first by providing a personal example explaining your favorite food, for example, and fill out the first line together.
  • Play each clip 2-3 times and encourage students to just listen the first time, jot down key words the second time, and confirm answers to questions the third time. Students could compare answers in between and/or it could be reviewed as a class at the end.

Optional Extension: students could compile information in a paragraph and/or make comparisons with the people in the clips to their own favorite foods through a turn & talk or guided discussion (Who likes/doesn't like...?/When have you tried...?/etc.).
