"New Choice" - An Introduction to Storytelling and Literary Elements
Arrange students into small groups (3-4 students) and provide every group with the same creative prompt.
Provide individual groups with different literary elements to focus on (for example, setting, character, point-of-view, conflict, etc.)
Each group of students must brainstorm and speak (or write) an original story based on the whole-class prompt. After a certain number of minutes, the teacher calls out "New Choice" and a different student from the group must take over the story, changing the literary element with which they have been assigned. For example, if their group was assigned setting, the story continues but the setting shifts. The story-teller must then adjust the storyline to fit the new setting. If they were assigned conflict, they have to change the type of literary conflict in the story and adjust the story to fit the new twist.
This game continues at least as long as it takes to have all students from each group take turns telling the revised story.
(An alternative approach is to allow the individual student groups to decide when to make the "new choice" request - this alternative may work best after students have gained experience with this process).
