Using Music to Teach Figurative Language With Panic at the Disco

Analysis Task: Using their notes, ask students to write an analytical paragraph in which they argue how the artists use figurative devices to shape meaning in their song "Hey Look Ma, I Made It." Their thesis should be clear, debatable, and specific, and they should incorporate specific textual evidence and analysis of that evidence in support of their claims.

Reflective Task: Prior to submitting their paragraph to the teacher, students should write a brief 1-2 sentence reflection of how the process of reading and re-reading the song lyrics affected their ability to effectively analyze the text as well as an exploration of how this process can be transferred to their reading and analysis of any text in the future.
