Who Am I - World History I People Review

Who Am I? – Write the name of the person being described after each question. 

1.        I lived in Greece. I am considered by many to be the father of history.  I wrote Historia about the Persian Wars.  It was the first book to separate fact from fiction.  ___________________________________

2.      I ruled the Byzantine Empire at its height.  My wife Theodora was a former actress.  I built the Hagia Sophia, the church of Holy Wisdom, in Constantinople.  I also codified Roman law into the Corpus of Civil Law.  ___________________________________

3.      I lived in Greece.  I am considered by many to be the father of philosophy.  I taught by asking questions and forcing my students to defend their answers.  My most famous student was Plato.  I was accused of corrupting the youth of Athens.  ___________________________________

4.      I lived in Russia, where for 200 years we had been under the rule of the Mongols.  I cooperated with the Mongols and got the title Great Prince, but I eventually asserted my independence and became the first ruler of the independent state called Russia.  ___________________________________

5.      I was from Spain, part of the Carthaginian Empire.  I led an attack against the Romans during the 2nd Punic War.  With a new military strategy, I crossed the Alps with elephants.  ___________________________________

6.      I was the first to unite most of Western Europe under one rule since the Romans.  I defended the Pope against the attack of the Lombards.  As a result, I was crowned Holy Roman Emperor.  ____________________________________

7.       I was from Macedonia, son of Philip II.  I was taught by Aristotle.  After the assassination of my father, I continued his goal of conquering the Persian Empire.  I united the Greeks and created an empire that stretched from Egypt to India.  ___________________________________

8.      I lived in Mesopotamia.  I developed the first written code of law.  My goal was to make justice appear in the land.  My code of law is often known for it’s “eye for an eye” approach.  ___________________________________

9.      I was one of Egypt’s greatest pharaohs.  I ruled for 67 years, had over 90 children, and built more monuments and temples than anyone else.  ___________________________________

10.   I am the founder of a religion with ideas that influenced Christianity and Judaism.  I taught that there is a struggle between good and evil and we have to choose sides.  We will then be rewarded or punished when we die according to what we choose.  ___________________________________

11.      I ruled Greece during it’s Golden Age.  I used money from the Delian League to build the Parthenon (the greatest example of Greek architecture).  ___________________________________

12.    I lived in Rome.  I am also known as Octavian.  I was the first emperor of Rome.  The Pax Romana began during my reign.  ___________________________________

13.    I lived in Rome.  I was one of Rome’s greatest generals.  I conquered Gaul (present-day France) and then Egypt.  I extended citizenship rights, gave land to the poor, and organized the calendar you use today.  I was given the title dictator for life.  I was very popular with the people, but the Senate feared my power.  As a result, they had me assassinated.  _______________________________

14.    We were from the area north of China.  We controlled most of Asia in the 1200s AD, including China and Russia.  ___________________________________

15.    We were a Germanic tribe that invaded and conquered England.  ___________________________________

16.    We were from Scandinavia.  We went all over Europe.  We were the most feared of the invading groups, due to our quick and destructive attacks.  ___________________________________

17.    We were from Asia.  We were nomadic horseman who eventually settled in Hungary.  ___________________________________

18.    We believed in the ideals of the Greeks and Romans, which emphasized the individual.  Our ideas were very influential on the art and literature of the Renaissance.  ___________________________________

19.    I was a Roman slave.  I led a slave revolt in 73 BC.  Over 70,000 slaves took part.  Within 2 years we were defeated by the Roman army.  ___________________________________

20. I was one of the Persian Empire’s greatest rulers.  I, as well as my son Xerxes,

expanded Persian rule.  Our empire stretched from Asia Minor to the Indus

River.  We both attempted to conquer Greece, but failed. ____________________

  21. I was the fiercest Mongol leader.  I led conquests in China and most of Persia.

We were extremely successful in battle.  ___________________________

22. I was the grandson of the great Mauryan ruler, Chandragupta.  I enlarged the

empire to include all of India.  I converted to Buddhism and sent missionaries to other countries.  _____________________

23. I unified China.  I built the Great Wall of China to keep out invaders. 

Although I conducted the world’s first book burning, I also standardized coins and a system of writing.  ________________________________

24. To help solve the problems of the Roman Empire, I divided the empire,

because it had become too large for one person to rule.  I successfully drove out barbarian invaders for a time.  ___________________________

  25. I was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity.  I stopped Christian

persecution.  I moved the Roman capital to Byzantium, and renamed it after myself.  _________________________
