Carnival Games Exploration (slope and y-intercept)

This is a lesson that introduces kids to the concepts of slope and y-intercept as they relate to multiplicative and additive relationships. Students explore a range of scenarios and apply prior knowledge to complete tables, then look for similarities and differences between the scenarios. Once students share their ideas, they complete notes that introduce the specifics and then return to try to write equations that go with their tables.

For most of this lesson, the teacher should serve as a facilitator, asking questions to push student thinking. Students should work with each other to make sense of the scenarios and draw conclusions based on evidence, then return to their conclusions to edit and extend their understanding.

This is a full lesson. If your students tend to work slowly, you might want to split it over two classes. Additionally, there is some graphing work/notes that could be removed from the lesson and completed separately if it feels like too much.
