Introduction to Poetic Analysis Using Elizabeth Bishop's, "One Art"

Depending on class needs, teachers may elect to have students craft a written analytical response to the poem following this activity.  Because you do not know until the class discussion what direction students will take in their analysis of the poem, you may wish to keep the writing prompt fairly broad. For example: "How does Bishop's use of figurative elements shape meaning?"

Alternatively, if you wish to expand the lesson by following up the introduction to analysis with more structured analysis in later classes, you may wish to adapt your writing prompt to a more specific learning goal based on the focused lessons, for example: "How does the author employ poetic shifts to drive meaning?"
