Immortalized Theme Poetry Project

The following mini unit is designed to expose you to a variety of poems based on the common theme you chose to immortalize. You will be writing poetry, finding poetry, reflecting on poetry, and talking about poetry.  You will also create a Google Site to house this project. At the end of the mini unit, I hope that you see that there is some poetry out there for you to enjoy!

Poetry Requirements

  • You must pick five poems that relate to your common theme, each written by a different poet.
    • Write about why you chose each poem and how it relates to your theme (100-150ish words)
    • Paraphrase your poem: in other words, write about what your poem means
  • For each poem, you must also choose one of the following activities below, which will help you engage with the poem more in depth. You must choose at least three different options, though you could do a different one for each poem.
    • Using Google Slides or Google Drawings, create an artistic rendering of a poem. Think of it as a collage of the poem that uses images, color, and important phrases/lines from the poem to represent it in a different format. See examples posted in Google Classroom for reference.
    • Write your own poem that responds to one of your chosen poems. In other words, what would you say back to the poet. (This poem doesn’t count as one of your three original poems.)
    • Annotate the poem. This option is more analytical. You should use Google Docs and the comments feature. Your annotations should include your responses to the poem, definitions of any unfamiliar words, and examples of figurative language.
    • Research the historical and/or cultural context of the poem and write an at least 200-word report of your findings.
    • Relate the poem to any text we’ve read in class this semester. Write about that connection in at least 200 words.
    • Relate the poem to any independent reading book you’ve read this semester. Write about that connection in at least 200 words.
    • Your choice: talk to your teacher before embarking on your individual adventure.
  • Write three original poems.  Yes, your very own. Do not try and find one on the Internet or in a book—that would be plagiarism, and no one likes a plagiarist.
    • The poems need to relate to your theme.
    • In addition, you will receive additional points if you choose to do a SONNET with all of it characteristics. Don’t know what those are? Look it up!

On the Google Site you create for this mini unit, you should have one page for each poem. Additionally, on the home page, please include the titles and poet names.
