I conducted this activity with my AP Literature & Composition students in connection to their gothic choice texts. Prior to beginning this activity, students selected and read one of: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley or The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

Based the text they selected, students were grouped into small groups of 3-4 students who all read the same text. 

For Frankenstein, I included the following items on my honeycomb cards:

Dr. Frankenstein, The Creature, Walton, Elizabeth, the DeLaceys, Appearance, Regret, Ambition, Justice, and Morality.

For The Picture of Dorian Gray, I included the following items on my honeycomb cards:

 Dorian, Lord Henry, Basil, Sybil, James, Appearance, Regret, Redemption, Passion, and Painting

When you follow this link, you will be able to "flip" the strategy card over and find the link to the honeycomb harvest creation tool.  Simply add in whatever ten text features you would like your students to link together and you're all set! Students must review their cards and then figure out how to create a honeycomb so that the connection between any cards that touch can be justified by the text.

This activity works best as a literature group activity that is designed to deepen students understanding of a text during the instructional unit rather than as a stand-alone assessment. The discussions generated from this task center around new understandings students develop as they review the source text, conduct close-reading, and continually reassess what they know - or think they know - about the text.
