Formative Assessment - Compute and distinguish between permutations and combinations - Just in Time Quick Check, Teacher Notes, and Supporting Resources

Counting using permutation and combinations Mathematics Instructional Plans (MIPs) help teachers align instruction with the Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) by providing examples of how the knowledge, skills and processes found in the SOL and curriculum framework can be presented to students in the classroom.

Students will sort twelve scenarios into permutations and combinations. Once they have correctly sorted the scenarios, they will solve the problems in the scenarios and learn how to check their work using the Desmos graphing calculator.

Students are given either a problem, spaces for possible numbers, a formula, an answer, or a combination of some of those items and must fill in the missing spaces. Adapted from a Mathematics Enhanced Scope and Sequence lesson for Algebra II from the Virginia Department of Education.
