Students will look at images of commonly used technology devices and their function. They will learn questions that they can ask themselves when a device isn’t doing what they expect it to do. They will practice describing what a device is or isn’t doing.

The students will graph the daily weather on a Picture Graph. This is an ongoing lesson that can be incorporated into Morning Meeting or Calendar Time each day. The lesson will begin by singing a weather song. After this, the students will observe the weather of the day by looking out the window. The teacher can also help the students check the weather of the day by pulling up the Weather Channel website for students to view the local weather of the day. After determining the weather, the students will fill in one of the boxes on their Weather Graph. At the end of the month, the teacher and students will discuss the variety of weather conditions that are on the graph.

Students will work together in groups of 3 - 4 and through whole group discussion to create a timeline to plan a fieldtrip. Grade K students will use Bee-Bots to strengthen their understanding about rEnglishtive location and positional words. Students will review their positional words through an interactive sing along as an activator to the lesson. They will then continue working in collaborative conversations as they review Bee-Bot programming protocols. At the end of this lesson, students will use their knowledge of creating algorithms, which are used in computer science, to create an algorithm and program Bee-Bot to the positional word of their choice. This lesson helps students learn essential skills such as rEnglishtive location, basic positional words (prepositions), problem-solving, critical thinking, and coding in a fun and engaging way.

Students will engage in collaborative conversations at multiple times to explore how community helpers can help us in our daily lives, while also learning from their peers during these conversations. Students will explore a nonfiction text during a read aloud to gain background knowledge of different jobs in the community before they complete their own chart in an independent activity and share how one community helper can help them. Students will gain an understanding that computer scientists gather and display data just as are doing with their independent activity!

One way to access data is through the computer. The computer can be used to construct tables and graphs from data collected in class; it can also be the source of existing data sets that have been compiled by others.

This activity can be done in numerous ways: during a whole group setting, during a reading small group instruction or during the students Language Arts center rotation time. Students will listen to the story LEXIE the Word Wrangler, by Rebecca Van Slyke. Using this mentor text will allow students to see how easily words and letters within words can be manipulated to form and build new or bigger words. Students will then be using color coded cards with letters (red- vowels, blue- consonants, green- silent e, orange- digraphs) to build words, provided by the teacher, from their spelling content, or come up with word,s using the directed patterns, on their own. This activity will help students to understand and practice the steps of pattern manipulation and coding, just like computer scientists due in so many programs we utilize today!

Students will watch a short video on how technology impacts global culture. Then the teacher will lead the students in a discussion about how the world has changed. The teacher will write on the whiteboard 3 headings, ‘before internet’, ‘task’, ‘world of internet’. In the task column the teacher will write everyday tasks that people have been doing since before technology. Some tasks include sharing photos, calling friends, finding a phone number, listening to music, and checking the weather. The teacher will have students raise their hands and give examples of how these tasks were done before the internet and then how they are done today with the internet. Once complete students will write their own persuasive paper on if they would rather live in a world with internet or without and why.

Students will investigate the idea that many things in our lives follow a sequence and an algorithm could be written to describe the sequence of steps. During this lesson students will learn the term “algorithm” and “least common multiple.” As students develop an understanding to the sequence of finding the least common multiple they will create an algorithm for finding the LCM to a given set of numbers.

Students will learn how to write and translate binary. Students will be given a binary chart and will use that chart to write words in binary and will be given binary to translate into simple words.

During this lesson, students will learn about different modes of sending, or transmitting information/messages. They will choose between four writing styles to communicate with either the teacher or a classmate. In addition, they will be able to analyze other student’s writing to determine the writing style that was used.

During this lesson, students will be exploring career opportunities in computing and non-computing fields. Through self-assessment, exploration, and discussion, students will identify attributes important to selecting a career match for themselves. The lesson will involve both whole group and individual activities, both online and off.

The internet is a multifaceted topic, and in a student’s schooling they will learn about the technical and practical aspects of this topic. In this lesson, students will jump into the world of how the internet is distributed to people in the world. To understand the limitations and abilities of the internet, students have to first understand how these internet providers distribute connections to people. In this activity, students will take on the role of an internet service provider and apply their critical thinking skills to figure out the best products and packages to suggest to specific families based on their limitations and needs. By completing this, students will get a better understanding of the process that is done behind the scenes in order to provide people internet, while also helping them build a foundational understanding of the internet that they can build upon in future years.
