This instructional plan teaches young students how to demonstrate leadership in a chamber music setting. This outline can be used to develop efficient rehearsal strategies with the proper resources for younger students to have consistent, meaningful rehearsals in the classroom with minimal teacher assistance.

This plan will provide the instructor with an outline and resources to direct students through the formation of a student virtual performance portfolio. Students will use their virtual performance portfolio to collect both individual and ensemble performing artifacts throughout the year to evaluate and critique performances, formulate and justify personal responses to music, and monitor individual practice and progress toward goals.

This lesson focuses on identifying and discussing the symbolism used in theatrical works. The culmination of the lesson is applying symbolism to a devised performance piece.

Students will learn the symbols representing Virginia (flag, flower and bird). Students will create a personal symbol. Students will create their own song/chant about a symbol or flag they created.

One of the most important functions of sound design is sound amplification. In this lesson, students will learn about basic audio equipment, to include cables, microphones, and the sound system. Students will also demonstrate how to set up a simple sound system.

This plan will provide the teacher and student with the resources to engage in kind and constructive feedback. Students will use music terminology to evaluate, define, and provide feedback to peer performances.

In this lesson, Kindergarten students will begin to explore the art form of dance as a means of expression to communicate feelings and ideas similar to the way spoken and written language are used.  They will observe young children dancing and interpret the possible meanings of these performances.

This plan identifies six key elements of musicality for singers. Students will apply each principle to their current choral repertoire to improve and develop musicality.

Understanding intellectual property and copyright is crucial to theatre practitioners, be they actors, technicians, directors, or managers. Students will research terms and identify cases of copyright infringement in the theatre arts.

Students will learn about contemporary artist Beatriz Milhazes. Inspired by her work, students will first practice using line, shape, and color by creating an abstract drawing using household items. Then, students will use digital drawing tools to explore those concepts and unexpected outcomes to create a final work of art.

This unit utilizes readily available gaming technology to teach and reinforce principles of theatrical set design. Students will create an original set design using computer gaming applications involving building tools.

In this plan, students will use the melody from the jazz standard “St. James Infirmary” as a springboard to improvisation. The students will utilize a call and response technique to learn the melody. Then students will learn several ways they can utilize the content within the melody of a song to improvise.

From classical composers to hip hop artists, musicians have used sampling to bring life to compositions. Creating and sharing that intellectual property can be tricky, but in this lesson, students in primary elementary will actively engage in the ethical treatment of other students' work and combine samples from their class into their composition.

Students will compose and perform a melody consisting of quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests using traditional and non-traditional notation. Students will also gain facility performing the notes E, G, A and C on the recorder.

In this lesson students will develop a story arc through a sequence of panels that contains a beginning, middle, and end.  Each panel will be illustrated in a style inspired by graphic novel illustrations. In this lesson, students are learning to tell a visual story based on a personal skill or achievement.

In this lesson, students will compose and notate “soundscapes” using found instruments. In preparing to notate their compositions, students will consider the limitations and benefits of extant notation systems.

Students will explore facial expressions, connect emotions to colors, and use those colors to indicate the expressive qualities of music. Students will create a colored mosaic based on listening examples.

Students will examine portraits of diverse artists to inspire unique self-portraits. Using  proportions and mirrors to draw self-portraits, students will enhance photocopies of their pencil drawings by adding visual representations of their likes, backgrounds, hopes, and dreams, as well as color. The first pencil portrait will be glued on the outside of an envelope, while the second colorful portrait can be slipped out from inside to reveal a deeper look at the student’s identities.
