Learn about art and the five senses. A lot of art is made to be seen — but what if you could touch, hear, and even smell works of art? In this episode, host Lauren Paullin shows you how to mix paints that smell like pastries and transform sounds into sketches. You'll also learn about a fascinating condition called synesthesia, which links multiple senses together in the brain so that some people can taste music, hear color, and smell words! Developed for students in grades 4- adults.

Students use digital research skills to Find Basic Information (F.B.I.) about a composer on websites such as Classic for Kids: Composer Explorer. Students learn about a specific composer, or composers from a specific geographic area, culture, genre, or time period. After gathering information, students write and produce a news program or podcast based on their research.

With the guidance and collaboration of an educator, students explore music composition using digital music notation software. This digital tool allows students to easily compose with traditional music notation. Students have the ability to drag and drop notes and rhythms on the staff, and can easily make changes to their compositions. Students are able to hear their composition with playback features, and receive immediate feedback on their rhythmic and melodic choices.

Students will collaborate with a penpal from another school to create a new piece of music together. Using a collaborative-friendly music platform, students will brainstorm and create a composition project. 

Students will use their creative writing power to explore what a composer/performer might have been trying to say or make their audience feel in a piece of music. Students will use creative writing prompts to explore musical elements, using appropriate music terminology.

The intersection of our musical being and creativity can provide a new, refreshing, and confident outlook on the way forward. In fact, this “great reset” can usher in a revitalized, newly inspired approach to music making. Let the possibilities begin!
