I created this game to use in a place value lesson.  This activity supports sol 3.1a, read, write, and identify the value of each digit in a six-digit whole number, with and without models.  Before this lesson, my students identified digits, placement of commas to form large numbers, and read numbers written in standard form. The focus of this lesson is to read numbers written in standard form and word form.  The teacher gives the students a card with a standard form or word form number.  They travel the room to find their partner.  Then, students tell the class how they know they are partners.  Student talk is incorporated into the lesson.  This is vital and allows students to develop thoughts and convey ideas about what they are learning.

In this 43-day module, students use place value understanding and visual representations to solve multiplication and division problems with multi-digit numbers. As a key area of focus for Grade 4, this module moves slowly but comprehensively to develop student's ability to reason about the methods and models chosen to solve problems with multi-digit factors and dividends.

This 20-day module gives students their first opportunity to explore decimal numbers via their relationship to decimal fractions, expressing a given quantity in both fraction and decimal forms. Utilizing the understanding of fractions developed throughout Module 5, students apply the same reasoning to decimal numbers, building a solid foundation for Grade 5 work with decimal operations. Previously referred to as whole numbers, all numbers written in the base-ten number system with place value units that are powers of 10 are henceforth referred to as decimal numbers, a set which now includes tenths and hundredths.

I created this game as a place value review for my students.  It supports sol 3.1a, read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a six-digit whole number.  In this 4-round game, students work in small groups cooperatively.  After each round is completed, the student takes the recording sheet to the teacher to be checked.  Students shoot a small ball into a trash can, laundry basket, or bucket from lines taped on the floor to earn points for their team.  This game is very engaging and helped my students practice place value and learn to work together as a team.

I created this game to give my students practice determining the value of a digit in a number.  It supports sol 3.1a, read, write, and identify the value of each digit in a six-digit whole number, with and without models.  Before playing the game, my students had opportunities to practice with base ten blocks and pictorial models to determine value.  This game is played in a small group of 3-5 students.  Students take turns flipping over a card and tell the value of the underlined digit.  If correct, he/she rolls a die and moves the game marker on the game board.  My students played this game during stations.  I love using games in my classroom because they are a great way to keep my lessons interesting and motivate my students to learn!
