This resource encourages literacy across the curriculum and the use of hands-on manipulatives to support and facilitate student understanding of the content. The illustrative mathematics incorporated a book and the suggested modifications will supplement the lesson allowing students to make relationship with the content and the real world. The suggested modification will allow students to have a mathematical discourse and use the language of mathematics.

In this enrichment lesson, students will use technology to demonstrate their understanding of intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary concepts by creating a math video on how they use mathematics in their daily lives. Throughout the activity, they will be able to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information gathered from observation or through experiments as they work with their peers in a collaborative setting.

A student choice board is valuable as students are able to think outside the box and dig deeper as they explore the content. The collaborative learning process encourages the 5 C's. This type of formative assessment encourages the use of multiple modalities and educational platforms as technology is the driver and content is the accelerator.

This resource incorporates the 5E instructional model, allowing student engagement and collaboration through an interactive scaffolding activity. The literacy connection section of the resource incorporates literacy across the mathematics curriculum and the design challenge section allows students to think outside the box as they apply their own knowledge, skills, and abilities to elaborate on the final product. Section 1 - The literacy connection section allows teachers to use this activity in a whole class setting and benefits students as it allows them to explore the story sequencing of the lifecycle of the caterpillar in an active and creative environment. This activity encourages active listening skills and student ownership as it encompasses the 5E instructional model. Section 2  - The design challenge is an enrichment activity, where students are able to work as a team and construct an explanation for their design challenge.
