In this lesson, students will learn about compound conditionals by playing the “Boole Says” game. Then, students will apply their knowledge as they predict, run, and investigate compound conditional structures written in Twine.

In this lesson, students engage in a historical jigsaw activity focused on westward expansion. The lesson ends with a coding project where students create “postcards” by coding with Twine, expressing the perspectives of different groups experiencing the effects of westward expansion.

Students will craft a Twine program with variables, conditionals, and relational expressions for a historical narrative on Westward Expansion. Students choose a project from a choice board & test products regularly during construction. Programs should offer multiple outcomes based on the user's choices or actions."

This is an activity to help students understand assimilation attempts.  The students watch a video clip, discuss assimilation, and create a poster advocating for or against the assimilation of American Indians during the time period of Westward Expansion.

This lesson recounts efforts to improve homesteading laws and make land ownership possible for more settlers. The distribution of government lands had been an issue since the Revolutionary War. Preemption -- settling the land first and paying for it later -- became national policy; however, supporting legislation was stymied until the secession of Southern states. This lesson encourages students to study a variety of documents to understand the impact of a particular piece of legislation and relates to the powers granted to Congress in Article I, Section 8 , of the Constitution, related to making laws. It correlates to the National History Standards and the National Standards for Civics and Social Sciences. It also has cross-curricular connections with with history, government, global studies, and music.

In this activity, students will learn about population movement, migration trends, and the westward expansion of the early 1800s. First, students will create a line graph that depicts changes in aggregated population data from 1800 to 1850 for Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Ohio. Using this graph, students will make data comparisons and draw conclusions. Next, students will compare the populations of several states between 1790 and 1850 and make conclusions that demonstrate their understanding of population trends in northern and southern states. This activity can spark discussion of sectionalism, slavery, and the different economic climate that took shape in the northern and southern states in the early 1800s.

The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand how new technologies, innovations, and government policies led to a new wave of internal and international migration and growth which was positive for some although it resulted in more displacement for American Indians.

This activity allows for analyis of the painting "American Progress" by John Gast. This activity can be used before Manifest Destiny is taught or after.
