The mission of the Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DRC) is to advance the effective use of public data on the status of children’s health and health-related services for children, youth and families in the United States. The DRC does this by providing hands-on access to national, state, and regional data findings from large population-based surveys. Data are collected from parents and thus contribute a much needed voice in the drive to improve the quality of health care for children and youth.

The goal of this exercise is to examine the relationship between demographic characteristics and different forms of civic participation. Crosstabulation will be used.

Designed for two 90-minute class periods. First students will imagine they are stranded on an island with no way to escape. It has all necessary resources to survive, and they have been tasked with creating their own system of government. Students will work in groups to create a government system, using slides or a poster to display their work.In the next class period, groups will take turns presentig their form of government to the class, and peers will ask them questions about their form of government and discuss if it would last several geerations. Includes Lesson Plan as well as Google Doc/PDF of student handouts and teacher/peer rubrics

Students will analyze primary sources from the Reconstruction Era to determine if Reconstruction was a success or a failure. They will place evidence on a scale for a visual representation of their evaluation.Teachers can modify and assign this Google Doc. You will need to make a copy of the document to access it.

Students will create a “social media post” to communicate something they want to barter. After learning what it means to barter, each student will be given a mystery bag (each containing different items). They will be told they have to barter at least one thing in their bag. They will draw/create an “Instagram post” with what they want to barter. We will then display them and students will walk around and view the posts. After viewing they will each get 2 hearts to place on items “like” and they would like to exchange in the barter. Students will then discuss with one another and barter until everyone has bartered one thing.

This interactive tool allows the user to view global housing prices by country and time frame, and housing price index, the percentage of change over time, housing price in real terms, house prices compared to rents, or house price against average income.

The most democratic body in the federal government, hundreds of representatives for the House are elected every other year. This site maps elections from before the Civil War until today showing changing patterns across regions and between urban and rural areas.

The goal of this exercise is to explore citizens' perceptions of ethics in politics through partisanship. Crosstabs will be used.

The student will use the poetry of Phillis Wheatley, Jacqueline Woodson, Countee Cullen, and Amanda Gorman to draw conclusions about the historic eras in which they wrote.

No sitting American president traveled outside the country before Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Panama in 1906 to see the construction of the Panama Canal. A century later Air Force One regularly carries the head of the executive branch to all corners of the world. The Executive Abroad maps the international trips of presidents and secretaries of state.

This resource presents a variety of digital resources hosted by Virginia Museum of Fine Arts that students can use to explore the life and work of renowned African-American photographer Louis Draper.  

At all points in its history, a significant proportion of the population of the United States had been born in other countries and regions. This being the case, American history can never be understood by just looking within its borders. The culture and politics of the US have always been profoundly shaped by the material and emotional ties many of its residents have had to the places where they were born. This map will allow you to begin to explore those connections at the basic level of demographic statistics.

This tool allows the user to see the results of Gallup data on the U. S. economy in a table form by Weekly, Monthly, and Quarterly averages. Some of the indicators are economic outlook, economic conditions, and payroll to population employment. 

This tool allows the user to view indicators in a map format by state and year.  The indicators that are displayed on the map are taken from Gallup Polls including Wellbeing, Economy, Politics, and Religion.  Data can be exported. 

This tool allows the user to examine approval rating of presidents from Harry Truman to Barack Obama and view historic trends, key statistics, and compare up to four president's approval rating.  

The goal of this exercise is to explore gambling behavior and characteristics of gamblers in the United States. Frequencies, crosstabulation, and bar charts will be used. This exercise will also illustrate the role of confounding variables in statistical relationships.

Identifying and opening lines of inquiry are crucial to a fruitful research process.  Students may practice this skill by inspecting, interrogating, and interpreting a work of art.  With the "Thought Ladder" activity, students build an interpretation step by step while gaining insight into the way they are processing their observations and forming their ideas.  By documenting quesitons and curiousities, they are able to open concrete lines of inquiry for further research. This resource includes activity instructions, graphic organizer, and teacher tips for use.  

Lesson Plan for a Constitution Scavenger Hunt.Students will engage in discussion about the organization and importance of the Constitution. After, students will be given the Scavenger Hunt and, using a copy of the Constitution, answer all questions going through each Article. The Scavenger Hunt goes over basic information within the Cconstitution. Follow-up lessons could go into deeper, higher level inquiry.Includes Lesson Plan outline as well as Google Doc/PDF attachments of the Scavenger Hunt.
