OVERVIEWThe Purpose of this lesson is to help students understand the concept that white light is a mixture of all of the wavelengths of the visible spectrum in roughly equal amounts. You can see beautiful colors everywhere you look! There is a lot of science behind the colors that you see. Color is the property that our eyes visually perceive and is derived from the spectrum of light. White light is a blend of all the spectrum colors which include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Individual colors of white light can be seen by using a prism which separates the colors and, in turn, white light can be seen when the spectrum colors are combined in such a fashion as a spectrum spinner. Each student will construct a spectrum spinner colored with the colors of the visible spectrum in order.

After explaining the Declaration of Independence to students, this is an extension activity for students to complete using the actual Declaration. Students will look through the copy of the document (with phrases highlighted) for answers to a set of questions about the contents, issues, and people involved with the Declaration of Independence. I also include a typed version of the Declaration of Independence for students that have trouble finding/reading cursive print so that they can still look through and see the exact contents of the document. This helps them to analyze this document as more than just a piece of historic paper or a history lesson, but see the thoughts, issues, and clarity this document presents in starting our country.

This activity is designed to help students gain practice with word derivations. The teacher will divide students into groups of two or three and give each group a dictionary. Students will identify the meaning of the listed base word and will work collaboratively to identify as many derivations as they can in the allotted time. Students should identify the part of speech for each derivation and write a definition for each derivation.

You are an expert at many aspects of your life. Maybe you bake the best chocolate chip cookies, or know how to hit a homerun in baseball. Perhaps you wrap beautiful presents or do amazing cartwheels or front flips. You will choose a task that you are very familiar with and write step-by-step instructions for someone who has never performed that task. ** This performance assessment was developed by a collaborative team of teachers and division staff from Middlesex, Poquoson, and West Point school divisions.

Primary SOL: 6.13 The student will solve one-step linear equations in one variable, including practical problems that require the solution of a one-step linear equation in one variable.I created a Jamboard with equations modeled on each slide. Students are to write an equation based on the model. The opening slide has the key for all subsequent equations. A red counter represents a negative integer, a yellow counter represents a positive integer, and a green rectangle represents the variable x. Equation model addition and multiplication. After students correctly write the equations, they may be asked to solve them. Students can use the pen function or the shapes tool to solve. https://jamboard.google.com/d/1DpkhDUuOZFt5sU62iD0z8yztbf2IKxSZAuR0myDPmco/copy?usp=sharing

I created this activity to introduce my students to write a well-rounded summary for a piece of fiction writing. Every year I see students struggling with how to correctly write a summary. I begin this lesson as a whole group activity then transition the lesson into small groups. I begin the summary practice by teaching my students to use an SWBST graphic organizer. They find that it’s much easier than they originally thought to write a well-organized summary. This activity provides practice for SOLs 4.5d and 4.6e.

https://jamboard.google.com/d/1LwWg8yVCV697GfTYOnC4RBahWgK7gbw2KfkGHh84fZI/copy?usp=sharingI created a Jamboard with expressions written as phrases. Students are to write an expression or equation using numbers and a variable based on the phrases. Slides 1-5 provide 10 practice problems. Slide 6 gives students 6 expressions and equations and allow the students to create the word phrase. By using Jamboard, I can see students work in real time. Students can work collaboratively or independently. These can be worked whole group and the teacher can share the document with students.

This activity is a great way to blend history with English! This activity allows students to research accounts of Yellow Journalism used during the Spanish-American War and bring those to modern life by writing a current newspaper article using yellow journalism styling! As both a US History and English/Reading teacher I use this activity when discussing the causes of the Spanish-American War. I have my students review multiple examples of authentic yellow journalism seen before the war broke out. I then have my students mimic the writing in their own yellow journalism article about a current world event.
