This is a unit plan to teach computational thinking in the primary grades.

Students participate in evaluating a description of a crime scene to prove innocence or guilt. 

This lesson teaches the difference between common and proper nouns. Use the attached PPT “Nouns Proper or Common” to go over the difference between a common and proper noun. After teaching the lesson with the ppt. hand them the sorting worksheet to work independently or with a partner. 

This is an online activity for students to compare and constrast settings,characters, and plot events.Students will design a storyboard using four to eight panels that will include digital props, characters, background settings, and character speech bubbles. Upon completion of comic story, students may print projects to share with others.

 Each student writes a one paragraph summary of a chapter of a book and then illustrates their chapter. It can be used for a book the whole class is reading so then all of the summaries are collected and bound together to create a “summary book” of the book read. This activity can be used for both fiction and non-fiction books in any subject and any grade, although this activity is linked to upper primary SOLs. This activity assesses reading comprehension and practices all writing skills. It also includes Art SOLs, and if you have students create their final products on the computer, then you would be incorporating the Computer Technology SOLs as well. If it is used for a non-fiction text in a different content class, then the activity would also cover those SOLs. It can be used for EL classes in middle school also.

The purpose of this document is to provide school counselors, English language learner educators, and administrators with best practices, technical guidance, and resources to support the identification, placement, and scheduling of ELs in grades K-12. School divisions should use this document as a resource for the creation of local policies. Updates to the content included in this document will be ongoing as policies and procedures change in an effort to maintain efficacy and accountability.Once students have registered for school, counselors, English language learner educators, and administrators have the responsibility to accurately identify students as ELs in a timely manner. Identification begins with administering the approved questions, developed in conjunction with the USED Office for Civil Rights and the U.S. Department of Justice and adopted by Virginia, on enrollment forms or a Home Language Survey to determine if a student is in need of English language screening. If determined eligible according to the identifying questions, the student should be screened for English language program eligibility; and scheduled into appropriate classes if classified as an EL.

This is a fun bingo ice breaker game designed to get students talking to each other about themselves. Students will be able to get to know each other in a fun and engaging way.

Students will understand that words that sound the same are called homophones. Students will choose the correct homophone to complete a sentence.

Students will learn what homophones are, look at some commonly used homophones and then practice a few examples.
