Explore the relationship between charge, electric fields, and forces on objects by manipulating charge.

Explore the role of charge in interatomic interactions. The forces attracting neutral atoms are called Van der Waals attractions, which can be weak or strong, depending on the atoms involved. Charged atoms (also known as ions) can repel or attract via Coulomb forces, and the forces involved are much stronger. Oppositely charged atoms attract to each other, while similarly charged atoms repel. The attractive forces between atoms have consequences for their interactions in physical, chemical and biological applications.

In this unit, students will explore the meaning of true friendship by reading Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. Charlotte's Web, a classic novel written in 1952, clearly illustrates how difficult and scary it can be to make a friend, yet how rewarding a true friendship really is. Over the course of the novel, students will consider what it means to be a good friend, whether or not friendship is always easy, and whether or not conflicts and struggle really are an important part of strengthening friendships. By deeply connecting with the characters, students will learn about the power of helping others, how creativity and determination can help solve problems, and that people can and do change. Students will also begin to understand the cycle of life and beauty, and the emotional responses that come with death through the eyes of Wilbur. It is our hope that this unit, in connection with other units, will provide the foundation for developing empathy and understanding about true friendship and life.

Charlotte's Web was chosen not only because of the strong theme of friendship and life, but because it is a classic in children's literature. Charlotte's Web was written in the early 1950s and contains themes and language that are more archaic than other texts from the year. Therefore, students will learn how to analyze themes, settings, characters and language that are less familiar and relatable.

3rd Students will complete a novel study on Charlotte's Web.  At the end of 3 chapters, students will complete and independent assessment.  

This is the original overview - This lesson provides teachers with support for using text-dependent questions to help students derive big ideas and key understandings while developing vocabulary using the children's novel, Charlotte's Web. A story of friendship and loyalty between Wilbur, a spring pic and a grey spider named Charlotte. Wilbur learns that he is being fattened for slaughter in the fall. Wilbur is at first disgusted by the fact that charlotte eats flies, but comes to both appreciate and love her.The remix plan is to use the actual novel but could be done just using this section of the book. All students would create their own summaries. 

In this lesson, students will look at different types of graphs. They will be given a question that they need to make a prediction about. After making predictions, they will research to find the correct data. Students will then record their information to make a chart or bar graph.

This assignment allows students the chance to practice writing a personal check, entering their expenses and income in a checkbook register. Although I copied and pasted the bulk of the assignment into the resource, it's best used if you download the document and adjust as needed in Microsoft Word.

In this activity students will analyze documents that span the course of American history to see examples of "checks and balances" between the legislative, executive, and judicial branches in action. Students will then match the documents they have examined with an appropriate description of the branches of government involved in the action.

Students will play the Game “Cheese Chase” where they learn about moving horizontally and vertically on a grid, which will be followed up by a variety of 40 gameboards where the students learn about naming cells in a spreadsheet. There are five activities where the students make bar graphs after interpreting data from a spreadsheet. 

This activity covers balancing chemical equations, endothermic/exothermic reactions, and identifying the reactants and products. I used this activity as a homework assignment to reinforce what had been taught in class that day. It could easily be adapted for use as a warm-up, extension activity, extra credit, reinforcement, etc.

In this activity, students explore reactions in which chemical bonds are formed and broken. Students experiment with changing the temperature and the concentration of the atoms in order to see how these affect reaction rates. They also learn how to communicate what happens during a chemical reaction by writing the ratios of reactants and products, known as stoichiometry.
