You are planning a special trip to a place you have always wanted to visit. You will need to know the weather trends for a specific time of year so that you will know what to pack. Students will create a presentation to organize their packing that should include a line graph included with data collected about local weather and communicate what they should pack and why based on their findings. Students will need to get feedback from peers if their conclusions for they need to pack align with the weather observed.  Students will use either a digital format or print format to predict what to pack for a trip of their choosing for two weeks. Students will choose a location, make a prediction, collect weather data, and analyze their results with a graph. Lastly, they will present to classmates to convince them to travel to their location and what to pack. 

This is an activity that can be used to introduce students to how the ASCII code is used in representing letters in coding.  Students will be given a table of the ASCII code that will be used to decode words and phases.  Then students will create a message in ASCII code and exchange with a fellow student to decyper the code.  An extension of this lesson can be to intoduce students to binary code that represent each digit int he ASCII code.

In this lesson, students will create a binary art representation of their names. This will reinforce the concept of using numbers to represent non-numeric ideas.

One of the fundamental computer science concepts is that everything we do on a computer is really just turning binary digits on and off. Even though this sounds simple, it can be a concept that is hard to wrap one's head around. This activity brings the binary concept to reality through the creation of binary bracelets or bookmarks.

Students will explore Virginia and its border states (Maryland, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina) then pick one of them to look at data of the monthly average high and low temperatures. Students will collect the data and use it to create a graph in Google Sheets. The graph will have correct titles and labeling. Students will also learn to predict as well as compare and contrast. This lesson integrates well into Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, Science and Computer Science.

Unplugged activites to help students realize algorithms are simply patterns that we use in our daily lives. 

Students will research one of the seven federally recognized tribes of Native Americans in Virginia to identify local features of the land, their language, the region of Virginia where they originally lived, where the tribal lands are today, and how they interacted with their environment. From this research, the student groups will design a visualization of this data using a poster, online design tool, or a presentation. Student groups will present their information to each other, and the classroom will design a chart to find similarities and differences between the tribes.

Binary is a way of representing information using only two options.Binary uses a series of 0 and 1 to represent information. In this activity, students will use a chart that converts binary numbers to alphabetic characters. This activity incorporates decoding of binary code into letters to answer questions related to energy and motion.

This lesson exposes students to the idea that computers have their own numeric language and that any data such as a picture, color, song, etc. can actually be represented using numeric values a computer understands.  Students will be able to identify the binary system and use the binary codes to represent textual data.  Students will also be able to represent pictures using numeric values by understanding and using the concept of pixels

Students will complete math problems on the Mathematical Color Picking handout to create corls by using the answers as values for Red, Green, and Blue,The handout also integrates number sense concepts that use the RGB values. 

Springing off of the picture book The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi, students contemplate diverse cultures and customs before learning about how a computer program translates English to binary code. This resource combines ELA with computer science and includes interactive read aloud questions, a discussion about culturally diverse backgrounds, review of the prefix bi-, introduction of binary language (with a translation chart), and instructions to create binary bracelets.

Students will be creating a timeline outlining the important dates, events, and people tied to the beginning/formation of colonial Virginia all the way up until the Revolutionary War.

Words matter, and the words we say to ourselves matter most of all.Through a series of reflective questions, students find their "one word" of focus to encourage and inspire them in the coming months. Appropriate for the beginning of the school year, the start of a new calendar year, or anytime in between, this lesson plan includes ideas for incorporating personal goal setting with writing, digital learning integration, and a follow-up lesson integrating computer science. 

This is a follow-up lesson to One Word: My Mantra which will allow students to write their "one word" in a different language and create classroom decor that will remind them how the classroom community is linked together to support one another in staying focused on their goals.
