This is a PowerPoint that helps young students know how to identify a computer program and what to tell an adult so they can help them fix it. It is based on the Computer Science standard, 1.8: The student will identify, using accurate terminology, simple hardware and software problems that may occur during use.

Students will explore computing parts and use oral language and content area vocabulary to describe items, then write a descriptive sentence to describe a technology problem.

This exit slip should be used after teaching computing systems vocabulary to check for student understanding of concepts covered. 

Students and the teacher will work together to complete the Computing Systems Kahoot. Students will complete the Kahoot in a whole group setting, but will have their individual chromebooks to work from. The teacher will read the question and answers to each Kahoot, and students will select the correct choice on their individual chromebooks. As each question is completed have a whole group discussion about the correct answer choice.

Teachers read aloud an eBook about computer systems. Teacher guide includes questioning activities and suggested follow-ups for after reading.

The provided resource will help first graders troubleshoot when experiencing technical difficulties prior to asking the teacher for help.
Print the following document(s) on cardstock.

There are three options
1. Print like a bookmark and fold in half. Glue the two sides together. The student will have to flip from front to back to see the problem and troubleshooting tips.
2. Print half sheet for students to see all the problems and troubleshooting tips at one time.
3. Print a class size to display in the computer center or on a wall near student desks.

You can use colors if it will help students better locate the item when they need help. The context is very simple as it is meant for younger students that may not be able to read all the terminology at the beginning of the school year. Please feel free to MAKE A COPY and then modify the context to better fit your classroom needs.
The teacher will need to review the document and symbols with the students prior to distributing individual copies. This will ensure better understanding of the terms used.

These posters define the vocabulary for K-2 Computing Systems SOLs in pictures and words. 

The student will learn the input and output of a computer and how it is used in the real world.  The student be given a play computer to explore and talk about what types of job computers are needed for and how the information gets into the computer. 

Students will learn about the problems that can occur to prevent an iPad from working properly.   They will then transfer this information to use problem solving skills to determine how a circuit works and what can prevent them from working correctly.Students are given circuits to explore and to be introduced to the basic knowledge of circuits and how they work. They will explore circuits and explore the problems that can occur to keep the circuit  from working correctly.

This engaging light lesson will allow your students to combine science, basic computer science and art concepts to construct their own understanding of how light passes through various materials.  Students will build their own light box to use for making art, and even be able to troubleshoot basic hardware problems all in one lesson!
