This performance task combines a computer science standard with both history and math standards. Students will "discover" an older version of a moden technology currently used. Students will collect data to determine which techonology has been most impactful on society. Students will graph and analyze that data.

Data and PredictionsComputer Science Strand: Data and AnalysisData can be useful to make predictions from trends in the data. A trend in the data is the general direction in which something is developing or changing. Based on the direction the data is going, you can make a prediction as to what may happen next. A prediction is when you use data to make an informed guess as to what may happen in the future.

What do you think will happen to Peppermint Puffs that are put in warm water, cold water, oil, and vinegar?  Will they dissolve?  In which substance will they dissolve the fastest?  In this experiment, your students will find out!  Students will also record their data and use technology (a spreadsheet on their Chrome book) to analyze, graph and discuss their learning.

What materials dissolve in water?  How does water temperature affect this?  Your students will work in groups using a thermometer and timer to discover if salt, sugar, sand, and flour will dissolve best in hot or cold water.  Further, your class will learn to record and submit data on a Google form and create graphs.  This will allow you to have great class discussions to draw conclusions about the effect temperature has on dissolving matter. 

Students will be able to explore the different types of soil by planting and monitoring their own plants!  Using the soil book, soil kit, and different soil, the students will have hands-on experiences learning about soil.  Dive into the different soil types and allow your students access to expand their knowledge using creativity and hands on experiences!
