Relative Fraction Value with Cuisenaire Rods
Rating
0.0 stars

This resource gives students the value of one Cuisenaire rod, and asks them to determine the value of a given picture of rods. By changing the value of the rods between each question, it challenges students to determine the whole. Students will need to have Cuisenaire rods in front of them in order for this resource to be used the way that it was intended.

Robots in Space
Unrestricted Use
Public Domain
Rating
0.0 stars

Students will apply their knowledge of the solar system in this two step challenge.  First they will use the attachments for their robot, Legos, and additional recyclable/craft supplies to create a space suit for their robot that will account for all of his basic needs while encountering the varying conditions in space.  Then, students will program their robot to visit the planets in size order starting with the largest planet.  Students can use number line mats, grid mats, or a piece of bulletin board paper to create their “map” of the solar system.  They will demonstrate their understanding by creating a diagram of the planets in order from the sun.

Roll the Money Game

Counting money is an important life skill.  I created this game to give my students hands on practice with counting money.  This activity supports sol 3.6a, determine the value of a collection of bills and coins whose total value is $5.00 or less.  This game has three recording sheets so that you can differentiate based on the needs of your students.  Students play with a partner to roll a die, write the number under each column, and put coins on the work mat to count.  Before playing this game, we sorted coins and talked about their characteristics.  Students need to be able to recognize the coins and know their value to be able to count money.  While students play the game, I walk around to help students as needed and to assess their counting ability.  This helps to guide my instruction for future lessons.

Students will design and create an aqueduct that will move water from a starting point to an ending point at least 1 foot away without leaks or spills.  The aqueduct must stand on its own, include at least one arch in the design,  and use the force of gravity to move the water.  Students must also design and create their own “castellum” or container to collect the water at the end of the aqueduct.

Rounding Decimal Numbers on a Number Line
Rating
0.0 stars

This series of Google slides guides students through rounding decimal numbers to the nearest whole number on a number line. It has the students identify the two whole numbers that the decimal number would be located between. Then, the students must identify the midpoint between those two numbers. Lastly, the students will put their value on the number line and determine which whole number it is closer to. This resource concludes by having students identify the range of numbers that would round to a given whole number.
