This lesson will teach students key vocabulary needed to understand computing systems. The lesson starts by showing a video to introduce key vocabulary terms. Then, teacher and students will have a class discussion to review components of a computer, hardware/software and input/output, and how to resolve problems when using a device. Teacher will facilitate a Kahoot, and students will answer each question individually to review material learned throughout the lesson. To wrap up the lesson, students will be asked to complete an exit slip by matching pictures to the correct terms (hardware, software, input, output).

This lesson teaches students how to use the correct terminology when encountering a computer problem.

In this lesson students will think about the many uses of technology in their own daily lives. We will also discuss how technology has changed through the years. Next, we will discuss technology's purpose and how the goal of technology is to make our lives easier. A google slides presentation has been included to help explain these concepts. Activity: Students will get a chance to compare and contrast a task both using technology and doing the same task without technology. Students will compare the differences for sending a message using technology and sending that same message with pencil and paper.

Use this resource set to guide young learners as they explore and interpret a diverse group of six artworks from the Virginia Museum of Arts collection.

Under the "suggested activities" menu next to each artwork, you will find link to an educator-led "Little Eyes Look" video. Using an inquiry-based approach that fosters curiosity and creative thinking, educators introduce viewers to vocabulary related to both art-making and the subjects depicted in the artworks. Students consider artistic intention and decision-making and are supported by factual content about artists's lives and art-making practices. 

Three open-ended engagement activities are also suggested with each work. These simple exercises can be used to foster extended thinking about each piece.

This lesson reviews citizenship expectations as students effectively communicate in small groups and the whole-class setting to prepare for a trip to the Science Museum! Students analyze and sort behaviors into categories, based on the attributes or actions described while reviewing vocabulary critical to a museum visit. Special thanks to the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Center for Educational Networks and Impacts at Virginia Tech for their advisement and resource contribution to this lesson. 

The students will participate in an escape room style challenge to uncover a strong password needed to access a computer program.

Using the fractured fairy tale The Three Little Javelinas by Susan Lowell students will become engineers as they plan, design, and construct new homes for the javelinas.  Can their homes withstand the coyote’s huffing and puffing?

After exploring The Three Little Pigs and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka students will be asked to determine which version of events is more believable.  Students will debate with one another using posters and their reasoning.  Can they convince others of their viewpoint?
