This is a task from the Illustrative Mathematics website that is one part of a complete illustration of the standard to which it is aligned. Each task has at least one solution and some commentary that addresses important aspects of the task and its potential use.

Students will use Bee-bots to code the robots to a value matching their selected coin card. They’ll count the coins, create a code with arrow cards, and navigate the Bee-bot from the start box to the designated value. After reaching the target, they’ll explain their coding and counting choices. Then, they’ll return to start, allowing their partner to take a turn. This activity is also compatible with the Learning Resources Code and Go Mouse.

The lessons included in the attached Google Slides incorporate standards from Computer Science, Math, Language Arts, and Physical Education. The lessons all focus on conditional statements (IF, THEN, ELSE) and can easily be adapted to fit any grade from kindergarten to fifth grade.

The students will demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within ten. The purpose of this task is to allow students to develop experiences with a visual and a mental description of part-whole relationships. This remix provides some helpful advice to teachers who expect their students need some scaffolding for this task.

In this first module of Grade 1, students make significant progress towards fluency with addition and subtraction of numbers to 10 as they are presented with opportunities intended to advance them from counting all to counting on, which leads many students then to decomposing and composing addends and total amounts. In Kindergarten, students achieved fluency with addition and subtraction facts to 5. This means they can decompose 5 into 4 and 1, 3 and 2, and 5 and 0. They can do this without counting all. They perceive the 3 and 2 embedded within the 5.
