This tool is a simple way to collect some data on the frequency of a desired or undesired behavior prior to a lesson or intervention. For example, if a teacher shares that calling out is a major concern you could observe a lesson for 30 minutes and record the number of times students call out during that time (by putting a check mark in a circle). Then after delivering instruction on the importance of being respectful and not interupting instruction do an observation for the same time period and see if there was improvement!NOTE: You could also as a teacher to collect the data for you!

After experiencing this module, students should understand that friction is a force that opposes motion (SOL 5.3e). This lesson was written with an inclusive fifth grade classroom in mind, but can be adapted for a smaller pull-out group if necessary. This module was developed by Karin Kaerweras part of a Virginia Commonwealth University STEM initiative sponsered by the Virginia Department of Education.

This resource is a remix from Illustrative Mathematics https://tasks.illustrativemathematics.org/content-standards/tasks/1081. Suggested Modifications: It is imperative that students in their early ages of mathematics education be introduced to the idea of the number line that makes sense. In other words, they usually count the tick marks on the number line which leads to an inaccuracy in the algorithm. To help them better understand number lines, the suggestion is to introduce the idea number paths which is another way of looking at a number line. To help better facilitate the lesson, I have added a downloadable document student activity that can be used in cooperative learning groups to facilitate mathematical discourse. This activity also encourages literacy in the curriculum.

To combat the common misconception that all mutations have large effects on proteins, students experiment with the Protein Synthesis Simulation to learn about the relationship among DNA, codons, amino acids, and proteins. At first, students investigate a strand of DNA that includes all 20 amino acids. Then, they make guided changes to discover that sometimes a single change can stop most of the protein from being formed, while another change produces no noticeable affect at all. Next, they complete challenges to mutate a DNA strand, and conclude with a mini-research project on mutations.
