Students will learn about treaties and what important role they have played in with Virginia’s Native Americans. They will learn why there are treaties and how they affected the tribes and the Europeans and where they stand in the 21st century. In the second lesson, the teacher will go through the slides with the students explaining what was agreed between the Natives in Virginia and the Europeans that came to their land. This lesson can last as long as it takes to get through the slides, or the teacher can pick some of the agreements and discuss with students.

This performance task is a computer science (CS) integration project where your students will take you on a virtual field trip. It can be to a museum, a historical site, a modern destination, a book, a planet or really anywhere. Along the way, they will incorporate CS concepts into their projects including sequences, conditionals, and events to add interactivity. This is a great project for students to share their research and learning from a wide variety of subject areas like social studies, language arts, world languages, history, etc. This unit includes 5th grade standards for the Virginia CS Standards of Learning, but it can easily be adapted for younger and older students. This lesson examines what people are doing to protect Earth’s clean water supply through the text Young Water Protectors, a story about the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and their efforts to prevent the Dakota Access Pipeline. Students will examine the Standing Rock perspective, and consider what needs to be done to protect our water sources. Students will respond to this activity through writing prompts and represent one of those prompts through programming in Twine.This lesson was created through a partnership between CodeVA and the Virginia Tribal Education Consortium (VTEC).
