Students work independently, or in small groups, to simplify or evaluate sets of four expressions, then calculate the sum of their answers.  This activity is self-checking, using a Google Form.

I created this activity to give students extra practice with identifying synonyms and antonyms. This activity keeps students engaged and thinking. I begin teaching synonyms and antonyms at the beginning of the school year. My students play this game throughout the year. Occasionally I add new words so my students are continually being challenged. This is excellent practice for  SOL 4.4b.

The students will gain an understanding of the sources of information used by geographers and apply what they have learned to analyzing primary sources and secondary sources and synthesizing what they have learned into a secondary source of information.  

In this self-checking activity, students will match 18 cards, identifying the slope, y-intercept, and slope-intercept form of each equation to match each of the six tables.

This lesson will provide information about the impact technology has on human activities and lifestyle.  It should provide students with an understanding of how the traditional impact of the environment on humans is altered in today’s society by technological advances which allow humans to live beyond the limitations of the environment.  Students will brainstorm and provide prior knowledge to lead discussion while the teacher will respond to student input by correcting and adding information as needed.  Students will also draw plans for a city and indicate how technology will improve life for the residents.

Students use average temperature data from CityRating.com to find and use a curve of best fit for the average temperature in Richmond, Virginia.

This lesson connects the invention of the x-ray by Tesla to the artwork of Austrailian Aboriginals.

Students will understand the importance of text features in nonfiction texts and will use them to tell about themselves.

  The students will use knowledge of organizational patterns and transitional phrases to write a magazine article that reviews concepts already taught in a different content area (i.e., science, history).  The completed class magazine will be shared with the community (students, parents, teachers) to demonstrate the content learned.** This performance assessment was developed by a collaborative team of teachers and division staff from Middlesex, Poquoson, and West Point school divisions.
