This is a 4 day series of lessons designed to familiarize students with 3D design and computer aided design using Google SketchUp.

Students are asked to review a variety of resources to learn about renewable energy then create a Google Slides presentation on the six main renewable energy resources (solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy, hydropower, geothermal, and hydrogen).

This unit is intended to address the VA Standards of Learning for World History II Standards 6 and 7.  Students are required to explore the similarities and differences between the various Asian land empires and African societies of the 1500s-1800s, with a particular focus on geographic, political, cultural, and economic interactions with each other and the rest of the world. Through the unit, students practice information literacy skills as they research and become experts in one Asian or African empire, work with a group to develop a virtual museum exhibit on it, and explore the virtual museum exhibits created by the other groups to learn about all of the empires and synthesize the unit content.  The unit, which is separated into 6 modules,  was designed for use in a virtual learning environment with both synchronous and asynchronous components.  It could easily be converted to a fully face-to-face unit, but it would be challenging to convert it to a fully asynchronous online unit because of the group work activities involved.

I love this activity, and I think it is a great instructional resource for students to learn about atomic structure and counting atoms in compounds.  However, I would like to add a single modification.MODIFICATION:  Add the following question: How are atoms of one element different from the atoms of  a different element?   This resource is designed to accompany students notes, texts, and other instructional resources and provide a means to review what they have learned about atomic structure and counting atoms in compounds.

This is a virtual learning hyperdoc assignment that could be used in any course to address related careers and/or information literacy skills, though it was developed for use with 9th grade English classes.  If used in a state other than Virginia, the teacher would need to replace the resource Virginia Career View and related questions in phases 3 and 4, as well as in the “Learn More” box at the bottom.

 Introduction:The atmosphere consists of many different layers that each have unique characteristics. Other things in day to day life also consist of layers that have unique characteristics, like beds, burritos, and sandwiches. Task: Draw a picture to compare the layers of Earth’s atmosphere to something else that has layers. For example, you could draw a cheeseburger and write “The lettuce on the cheeseburger is like the Mesosphere, because they are both the coldest layers.”

Students compare and make connections between the novel A Christmas Carol and the Victorian Times through a jigsaw activity which guides them through a virtual tour of the Charles Dickens museum in London. 

We can’t expect our students to be engaged or do their  best if we haven’t created an environment where students feel: safe to try, fail & try again, supported,encouraged, their opinions & ideas matter, they have a voice & choices in how they learn.

This is a set of Google Slides or PowerPoint slides intended to facilitate presenters who are developing presentations and want to share those slides with an open license.  Each slide offers information about creative commons as well as a footer that can be copied, edited, and used to indicate the presenters willingness to share their work as OER.

This is a virtual learning assignment that could be used in any course to address current events, information literacy skills, and media literacy skills.  Please note that the assignment references a proprietary resource: the Proquest online database.  Teachers may need to modify the referenced resource (particularly in Phase 1) to include one that is available to their students.

Design Your Own Experiment : a Health & Biology Interdisciplinary Learning Experience The Heart of Scientific Literacy: understanding scientific investigation & experimental design Purpose:The purpose of this activity is for you to explore the process of scientific investigation through a health lens.  You will consider ways in which data is collected to inform your health and well being.  You will create and carry out a valid experimental design in the fitness room or small gym.  Your experimental design must yield reliable data.  You will analyze the  data to make a claim and support it with evidence. In short, you will carry out a scientific investigation from start to finish to grow in scientific literacy and make informed decisions about your health.

This is a collaborative task that can be modified to be accomplished by students in both the face to face and the virtual environment.  The task involves researching chronic medical conditions and evaluating data provided in a case study in order to make conclusions about potential disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.
