6.12 Ratios and Proportional Reasoning.

This lesson should be used as practice after students have had experience with ratio tables, graphing points, and determining proportional relationships.  On slides 1-4 students are given a situation, then they complete the ratio table, graph the coordinates, and determine if the relationship is proportional.   On slides 5-7 students are given graphs and asked to determine if it represents proportional relationships, and explain why.  On slide 8 students are given written situations and asked to determine if they represent proportional relationships and explain their reasoning.  This lesson was created with Jamboard to provide teachers and students with real time collaboration.

Students lean about proportions, ratios, and unit rate. It is important for connections to be made among ratio tables, graphing points, and slope of a line. Students make these connections through the first activity provided by the VDOE. The second task by Illustrative Mathematics is a way to assess student understanding.

This assignment can be completed individually or in a group of 2-3.  The teacher begins with slide 2, a welder can earn $17/hr.  Then using multiplicative or additive properties to complete the table.  The first 2 career options give hourly rates.  The following two give weekly rates, while the last is a yearly salary.   Students can work up or down the ratio table depending on their comfort level.   The last three slides are for the students to explore salary options not mentioned before.  Students are increasing by 10's and doubles to find the salaries.
