Perimeter with Missing Sides Game

Perimeter with missing sides is a skill that my students need lots of practice with.  After we practice together, measuring around a polygon, I have them practice finding the perimeter by playing this game, Perimeter with Missing Sides Game.  The game was made with Google Slides so it can be played whole group or assigned in Google Classroom for students to work on individually.  This game supports sol 3.8a, measuring the distance around a polygon in order to determine its perimeter using U.S. Customary and metric units.  I created this game in order to give my students fun practice in a virtual setting but I’m able to use it with both in person and virtual students.

Place Value Shoot Game

I created this game as a place value review for my students.  It supports sol 3.1a, read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a six-digit whole number.  In this 4-round game, students work in small groups cooperatively.  After each round is completed, the student takes the recording sheet to the teacher to be checked.  Students shoot a small ball into a trash can, laundry basket, or bucket from lines taped on the floor to earn points for their team.  This game is very engaging and helped my students practice place value and learn to work together as a team.

This resource can be found in Illustrative Mathematics website. There are a few modifications that were necessary to support the original lesson. Suggested modifications: Instead of providing with an activity, I strongly suggest activating student's background knowledge with a book on "The Greedy Triangle" by Marilyn Burns which encourages literacy in the curriculum. Students often are motivated to write a children's book or a poem, as it allows them to think outside the box. Secondly, the suggested activities will allow students to explore and have a mathematical dialogue about different polygons, and discourage rote memorization of geometric shapes.

This geometry lesson is a remix from Illustrative Mathematics.  In this lesson, students identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons.  Students are also required to make these shapes using manipulatives.  https://tasks.illustrativemathematics.org/content-standards/tasks/1506

This is a remix of Polygons from Illustrative Mathematics, https://tasks.illustrativemathematics.org/content-standards/tasks/1506.The purpose of this lesson is for students to define and practice identifying polygons to support sol 3.12a and 3.12b.  The lesson starts with a discussion about four polygons (triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons).  Next, students play a game called 4 corners.  By incorporating movement games and activities in my classroom, the attention and behavior of my students have improved.

I created the Polygons Sort Jam to give my students practice with polygons vocabulary.  Before doing the sort, I have my students practice with drawing polygons and playing games to help learn the names.  I also give them a helpful hints page to help them remember the names and sides of the polygons. This activity supports sol 3.12, identify and name polygons with ten or fewer sides.
