ClassifyingMathematics Instructional Plans (MIPs) help teachers align instruction with the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) by providing examples of how the knowledge, skills and processes found in the SOL and curriculum framework can be presented to students in the classroom.

Lesson Topic: Sorting attribute blocks, collecting data, and creating graphsSummary: In this lesson, students will sort and classify attribute blocks based on the different attributes (shape, color, size, thickness).  They will then collect and record data of their findings and turn that data into visual representations.

Students will read a variety of texts to include Fiction and Literary Nonfiction, Poetry, and Expository Nonfiction to complete the following tasks:1) read and annotate both a fiction and nonfiction paired passage2) complete the Author's Craft Graphic Organizer for each text.3) write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the two texts using the graphic organizer for guidance.

This lesson includes a ppt. slideshow which includes definitions, examples, and 6 practice  problems to check students’ understanding. Students will learn the acronym PIE to remember the three reasons--Persuade, Inform and Entertain.

I created this activity to help students learn to identify the author’s purpose. This activity is meant to help students see the completed strategy while asking them to analyze what is going on. This allows the students to pick apart the completed strategy in order to better understand it. This activity should be completed before asking students to identify the author’s purpose of an entire passage. When talking about author’s purpose use the acronym PIE (persuade, inform, and entertain). This is an engaging way to practice SOL 4.6b.

It provides pre-employment training to students and teaches the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities for entry-level employment in the automotive service industry. This skit is a project that I use along with the Avancemos 1 Spanish curriculum. It aligns with Unit 5 Lesson 2 (party and chores vocabulary, affirmative tú commands, hay que and acabar de phrases). I usually opt for flexible grouping and allot five to six 55-minute class periods for this project. Students always enjoy these skits and wow me every year with their creativity. Just remind them (if necessary) that all skit content must be school appropriate.

This lesson focuses on sorting and classifying recreational activities into categories. Students participate in a sorting activity where they categorize recreational activities based on their attributes and the landforms where they would typically take place. They work independently or in pairs, either through Google Slides or printed copies, to complete this sorting task.

Modeling traffic data is important for urban planning, creating transportation systems, and even predicting how much foot traffic a retail store can expect in a given day. This genre of dynamic data science activities could be classified as “finding a needle in a haystack,” giving students a chance to mine big data to make insights about traffic use. According to the Bay Area Rapid Transit District, about 400,000 people used the BART system daily in 2018. In BARTy, students investigate BART data from 2015 to learn about passenger use and explore traffic patterns.

Learn about the very busiest time of year for Wildlife Center staff, students, and volunteers -- baby season! Spring is a time for new life; many species of wild animals are giving birth or laying eggs and caring for young throughout much of the spring. It's also the time of year when people are more active; as the warm weather approaches, humans spend more time in their yards and gardens and in the great outdoors. This increased activity of both humans and wild animals can put us all in more direct contact with one another. There are a number of misinformation and misconceptions about young wild animals; learn from the Wildlife Center staff how to best help young animals stay in the wild with their parents. UNTAMED looks at the wild and often perilous world of wildlife, as seen through the eyes of the patients of the Wildlife Center of Virginia, a non-profit teaching and research hospital for native wildlife.
