HPOL is a searchable multimedia database documenting and delivering authoritative audio relevant to American history and politics. This project is supported by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Teaching With Technology Program in collaboration with Michigan State University and the National Gallery of the Spoken Word.

The goal of this exercise is to examine the relationship between cultural identities and partisanship, vote choice, and liberal social policies. Crosstabulation, frequencies, and charts will be used.

This is a lesson for first grade to talk about how technology has changed our lives over the years. I have it related to the first settlers and the experience they may have had if they had today's technology.  We also will discuss the technology we use today in our rooms vs what used to be used and how our behavior online can affect us even when people can't see us. 

"Interacting With America" is comprised of rich data on human development in the US that readers can explore through a clearly depicted, interactive map on health, wealth and education in the 50 states. Teachers and students alike can draw comparisons between states through the use of the intuitively constructed histograms which display the human development indexes measured for each state.

This learning tool was developed and designed to facilitate teacher/student and student/student discussion and recognition of significant events, holidays and celebrations within their lives, families and communities and those of their peers.

This lesson is part of the Virginia K-12 Computer Science Pipeline which is partly funded through a GO Virginia grant in partnership with Chesapeake Public Schools, Loudoun County Public Schools, and the Loudoun Education Foundation.  During the lesson, students will investigate the relationships between natural, human, and capital resources. 

Modern Westerners brought up on a steady diet of popular songs and romantic movies tend to believe that interpersonal attraction and mate selection are both random and very subjective. Popular culture propagates the notion of "love at first sight" and teaches us that "love is blind, "love just happens," and "you can't help who you fall in love with." Research shows, however, that this is not necessarily true and that, in reality, society aims Cupid's arrow more than we like to think. In this exercise we explore the concepts of homogamy, routine activities, social networks, and mere exposure by examining how similar respondents are to their partners on a variety of social characteristics and how they met and became involved with their partners.

A national leader in civic education, Kids Voting USA?? (KVUSA) gets students involved and ready to be educated, engaged citizens. Students learn about democracy through a combination of classroom activities, an authentic voting experience and family dialogue.

The students will learn the reason for the creation of HBCUs in the United States. The students will analyze primary resource image frames through the two Google Jamboards: KWL and drag and drop the Virginia HBCUs and Fraternities and Sororities. 

The process of how a bill becomes law is a fascinating process that is much more than just a Representative or Senator introducing a bill and having it move through the process to its eventual demise or addition to another bill or to the bill ending up on the President’s desk itself.  An even more interesting question is: “What is the subject matter of MANY of these bills- researched, drafted, and introduced?  This lesson will tackle that question and many others!

Today we do lots of activities online. Students need to know the importance of having a secure password to keep their information safe when using the internet. In this lesson students will learn to make a safe password with a hands on activity.

Students will be able to distinguish between weak and strong passwords and how passwords could have looked in Ancient Egypt!  Using the stamps, hieroglyphics stamps, magnetic letters, and papyrus paper, the students will be able to create passwords.  Dive into the differences in Ancient Egypt and today and learn how to keep your information safe!

Like so many other government agencies during the New Deal, HOLC and its parent bureau, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, shaped Americans' lives and livelihoods profoundly during and after the Great Depression of the 1930s. Both proved critical to protecting and expanding home ownership, to standardizing lending practices, and to encouraging residential and commercial real estate investment in a flagging economy. Across the middle third of the twentieth century, arguably the most prosperous decades in American history, these agencies worked with public and private sector partners to create millions of jobs and help millions of Americans buy or keep their homes. At the very same time, federal housing programs helped codify and expand practices of racial and class segregation. They ensured, moreover, that rampant real estate speculation and environmental degradation would accompany America's remarkable economic recovery and growth.

This lesson reviews citizenship expectations as students effectively communicate in small groups and the whole-class setting to prepare for a trip to the Science Museum! Author: Katie Frazier, Museums at W&LStudents will examine a ceramic object made by David Drake (about 1800-about 1870), an enslaved person who lived on a plantation in Edgefield, South Carolina. As an enslaved individual, Drake was denied the basic rights of learning how to read and write. Despite writing being illegal for enslaved people, David Drake was known for writing his name and poetry on the ceramics he made. He wanted to express his feelings about life, religion and his own identity as an enslaved person.
