This is an open ended task where students will use their knowledge of the distance formula to describe a day of running errands around town. In this task, students will choose places to go and determine how far they traveled on a spceific day.

 I created this game to give my students practice determining the value of a digit in a number.  It supports sol 3.1a, read, write, and identify the value of each digit in a six-digit whole number, with and without models.  Before playing the game, my students had opportunities to practice with base ten blocks and pictorial models to determine value.  This game is played in a small group of 3-5 students.  Students take turns flipping over a card and tell the value of the underlined digit.  If correct, he/she rolls a die and moves the game marker on the game board.  My students played this game during stations.  I love using games in my classroom because they are a great way to keep my lessons interesting and motivate my students to learn!

After reading "The Treasure of Lemon Brown," students will complete the vocabulary activity using terms from the story. Student are asked to definte the word and part of speech, identify synonyms and antonyms, write a sentence with the word using context clues, identify other forms of the word, and identify any prefixes/suffixes. Students may work independently or in pairs to complete the assignment. While the attached document is specific to "The Treasure of Lemon Brown," the assignmet format may be used for vocabulary words from any text selection.

This is part of a series of lessons commissioned by the Democracy Project at the University of Virginia centered around the podcast Democracy in Danger.Democracy in Danger  lessons share some basic characteristics.   In each of these inquiries, the explicit or implicit question is, “What should we do about .. “ because that is an essential question we must ask of all of our citizens.   Additionally,  Democracy in Danger lessons  will lead students through a problem analysis characterized by the 4A approach (assses the problem, analyze the causes and effects of the problem, address  potential solutions to the problem, act on a potential solution.   We hope to make this type of problem analysis process a routine that young people can transfer to any new challenge that we face in our democracy and that it will pave the way for healthy deliberation with their fellow students, to collaboratively act together, and to forge healthy civic friendships that will strengthen our democracy.

This inquiry focuses on understanding how the Kingdom of Mali became a center of wealth in West Africa. The questions, tasks, and sources in this inquiry asks students to analyze a variety of primary and secondary sources to determine the most important factor for generating wealth in Mali: geography, trade, or religion. 

Day OneHelp the students to choose the types of weathering and erosion for their project and then make like groups: Ice, water, and wind. After looking at several photos for inspirations the students will sketch the landscape depicting their chosen weathering and erosion.  Remind the students to think about their landscapes and choose colors and details that would help the audience understand the erosion that is taking place in the picture.Discuss painting techniques and how to create shades and tints of color to add depths and shadows to their paintings. 

The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand how new technologies, innovations, and government policies led to a new wave of internal and international migration and growth which was positive for some although it resulted in more displacement for American Indians.

This activity allows for analyis of the painting "American Progress" by John Gast. This activity can be used before Manifest Destiny is taught or after.
