Your students are archeologists at the Jamestown Settlement.  The settlement directors (teachers) would like to include information on the new website, and the students have been asked to make a program (ie presentation) on settlers first arriving in Jamestown and their first few years there.  They must target this program to people who are not familiar with the Jamestown settlement to attract their attention and curiosity to want to see more of the settlement and get them to come visit Jamestown.  Their program’s artifact should include pictures of real artifacts, maps, etc to help explain the sequence (ie timeline) of events or tell the story of the beginning of the settlement.  They should include a brief explanation with each slide.  They will present their presentation to peers who will give feedback as potential visitors to Jamestown.

Students will understand and explain the difference between a model and a simulation. Modeling means creating a physical replica or equations of a situation or activity. A simulation is a virtual representation of a process that reflects how a real physical situation would most likely happen. In Mathematics 8, students explore 3D models given a 2 dimensional perspective from the front/back, sides, and top. This will be an introduction to explore modeling 3D figures with a hands-on approach.

CATCH Healthy Smiles
Rating

CATCH Healthy Smiles is a program for grades Pre-K – 2 that is designed to improve the oral health of students by teaching about and encouraging proper toothbrushing and flossing techniques, a nutritious diet, and regular visits to a dentist.

Through the program, students learn about the major factors that cause tooth decay and develop the skills needed to maintain a healthy smile. The CATCH Healthy Smiles program is designed to help students:

* Discover the causes of tooth decay, including dietary choices and poor oral health habits in our oral health education programs;
* Develop skills for brushing, flossing, and choosing tooth-healthy foods & drinks;
* Recognize the importance of regular dental visits; and,
* Create personal oral health care goals.

CATCH Healthy Smiles was developed by researchers at the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health, with funding support from the National Institutes of Health.

Computer Science Careers Across Virginia: Digital Shipbuilding

From welding and paint simulators to virtually designing and creating parts for ships, this videoexplores how the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School incorporates computermodeling and simulations to give apprentices hands-on experience in a safe and cleanenvironment. A model is a set of algorithms that capture the behavior of a particular system. Asimulation is the process of running the model with a program. Computer models andsimulations are all around us. They help us make predictions about things like what the weatheris going to be or the best way to tackle a particular disease. They also play an important role inpreparing for jobs, like flight simulators that can help future pilots learn how to fly and medicalsimulations that can help future nurses and doctors learn how to treat patients. Computermodels can also simulate things that are not real like the physics of gravity in video games.

Elementary grade students investigate heat transfer in this activity to design and build a solar oven, then test its effectiveness using a temperature sensor. It blends the hands-on activity with digital graphing tools that allow kids to easily plot and share their data. Included in the package are illustrated procedures and extension activities. Note Requirements: This lesson requires a "VernierGo" temperature sensing device, available for ~ $40. This item is part of the Concord Consortium, a nonprofit research and development organization dedicated to transforming education through technology. The Consortium develops digital learning innovations for science, mathematics, and engineering.

These are simple ways to demonstrate water chemistry concepts such as adhesion, cohesion, and polarity to students in a hands on way using easy to find and inexpensive lab materials. The lesson was originally designed to align with a biology course to teach the impact of water on life, but it could also be modified to fit a chemistry or physical science curriculum.

1. Have the students bring a Math graphing problem that they have been working on in class.  **This will take some coordination with their homeroom teacher in order to work! or present a simple graphing problem for them to solve.  It needs to have 3-4 variables. This is so that they can use 3-4 coordinating colors of yarn for their design.In this lesson, we will translate the bar graph chart into a horizontal graph design.  Use the numbers to represent rows of weaving. For example, if a 5 is represented in the information then color in a section of rows on the graph paper to represent 5 rows that will be woven in that color. Tell the students to use the same colors that they have on their math bar graph, when creating their graph for weaving so that there is less confusion.
