When developing programs, students are able to use algorithms, code, and other media created by others. In this lesson, students will learn how to use existing algorithms (formulas) to solve problems involving the area and circumference of circles. They will also learn about Creative Commons, a set of intellectual property laws that govern the use of media created by others. Students will illustrate their problems using images governed by Creative Commons and will cite their sources.

It isn’t just an aesthetic problem; it has serious impacts on habitats, wildlife health, as well as human health and safety. The consequences of even small acts of littering can be far-reaching and long-lasting. Join the Wildlife Center staff and watershed conservation authorities to learn more about the problems litter can pose, as well as a variety of ways that you can help reduce litter.

 Each student writes a one paragraph summary of a chapter of a book and then illustrates their chapter. It can be used for a book the whole class is reading so then all of the summaries are collected and bound together to create a “summary book” of the book read. This activity can be used for both fiction and non-fiction books in any subject and any grade, although this activity is linked to upper primary SOLs. This activity assesses reading comprehension and practices all writing skills. It also includes Art SOLs, and if you have students create their final products on the computer, then you would be incorporating the Computer Technology SOLs as well. If it is used for a non-fiction text in a different content class, then the activity would also cover those SOLs. It can be used for EL classes in middle school also.

Students will participate in the planning, costing, preparation, serving, storage and critique of meals in project based learning. Nutrition and applied academic skills are incorporated in each unit. Career seeking and transferrable skills are incorporated into this curriculum culminating in a portfolio. Students that perform well could be placed in work-based learning environments.
