A globe is a world map on the surface of a small sphere that represents the Earth. Of all the world maps, the globe is the easiest to understand because it gives us the most realistic picture of the Earth and has the same attributes as the Earth; round and immense, and impossible to see all at once. Spatial attributes such as distance, direction, shape, and area are preserved as well as the continuity of the all-curved surface. Globes represent the best possible map projection because they include a minimum of distortion and are the ultimate in geographic realism.
This lab requires students to construct 2 globes using tennis balls as the base structure and the world maps linked here.

Description: Many people love roller coasters, but a portion of the population might prefer a slower, calmer ride experience. Busch Gardens, a popular theme park in Williamsburg wants to offer a variety of rides that appeal to all ages and abilities. Can you help them design and create a roller coaster that will move at a much slower pace than the typical roller coaster? You will present your prototype in the form of a marble run built on the provided surface. Think about the marble runs that you may have played with or built when you were younger. Can you redesign a marble run that will take the marble the longest amount of time possible to reach the end without stopping? At the conclusion, each group will test and time their marble runs.

This book contains 24 illustrated math problem sets based on a weekly series of space science problems. Each set of problems is contained on one page. The problems were created to be authentic glimpses of modern science and engineering issues, often involving actual research data. Learners will use mathematics to explore problems that include basic scales and proportions, fractions, scientific notation, algebra, and geometry.

As part of the introduction to the Periodic Table of the Elements, students will be introduced to the idea of atoms, molecules, and compounds. The physical manipulation of marshmallows (atoms) and toothpicks (bonds) will create a visual representation of the molecular structure of water. A second step requires students to create a second molecule using similar materials and using the Periodic Table as a reference point.

Description: Magnetic Max loves magnets so much, he decided to work for a roofing company, using his electromagnets to pick up nails for roofers when they are done with a roofing job. But, he needs your help. Max’s tool is too weak, and he needs you to create a model of a tool that can pick up the largest amount of nails in 10 seconds. He has to be able to pick up the nails, and then be able to release the nails and put them in a bucket for disposal.

Students will be able to explore matter, by getting hands-on experience experimenting with salt, sugar, sand, color changing beads, and hot and cold water.! Using the materials, the students will be able to use various materials to practice how objects interact with water.. Dive into matters and allow your students access to expand their knowledge using information that is transmitted using computing devices, because the students will record themselves discussing their results from their experiment to share with their classmates.

Students are given the scenario: You want to start a new summer business while you are off from school, you want to make and sell snow cones at your local playground, but you don’t want them to melt on the walk there. Can you design and create a container that will slow down the rate at which your snow cones will melt? Criteria include the size of the container and the determination of the temperature.

During the last sunspot cycle between 1996-2008, over 21,000 flares and 13,000 clouds of plasma exploded from the Sun's magnetically active surface. Students will learn more about space weather through reading a NASA press release and viewing a NASA eClips video segment. Then students will explore the statistics of various types of space weather storms by determining the mean, median and mode of different samples of storm events. This activity is part of the Space Math multimedia modules that integrate NASA press releases, NASA archival video, and mathematics problems targeted at specific math standards commonly encountered in middle school textbooks. The modules cover specific math topics at multiple levels of difficulty with real-world data and use the 5E instructional sequence.

This is a set of three, one-page problems about the size and area of solar panels used to generate power. Learners will calculate area fractions to compare the sizes and distances of Jupiter's moons. Options are presented so that students may learn about the Juno mission through a NASA press release or about how solar energy is used by various NASA satellites and technology by viewing a NASA eClips video [3 min.]. This activity is part of the Space Math multi-media modules that integrate NASA press releases, NASA archival video, and mathematics problems targeted at specific math standards commonly encountered in middle school.

When heat energy is transferred from a warm to a cold object, one cools down and the other warms up, but the total energy remains the same. This model allows you to watch this process and explore how to determine the final temperature.
Meiosis is the process by which gametes (eggs and sperm) are made. …
Meiosis is the process by which gametes (eggs and sperm) are made. Gametes have only one set of chromosomes. Therefore, meiosis involves a reduction in the amount of genetic material. Each gamete has only half the chromosomes of the original germ cell. Explore meiosis with a computer model of dragons. Run meiosis, inspect the chromosomes, then choose gametes to fertilize. Predict the results of the dragon offspring and try to make a dragon without legs. Learn why all siblings do not look alike.
Students use model chromosomes and answer analysis and discussion questions to learn …
Students use model chromosomes and answer analysis and discussion questions to learn about meiosis and fertilization. As they model meiosis and fertilization, students follow the alleles of a human gene from the parents' body cells through gametes to zygotes; thus, students learn how a person inherits one copy of each gene from each of his/her parents. To learn how meiosis contributes to genetic variation, students analyze the results of crossing over and independent assortment. Students also compare and contrast meiosis and mitosis, and they learn how a mistake in meiosis can result in Down syndrome or death of an embryo. This activity helps students meet the Next Generation Science Standards.
