This resource offers a safety guide to young online users. It should be used as a way to open discussions on internet safety with young children and help them navigate the obvious pitfalls of online life. SOL 2.14 The student will identify and model responsible behaviors when using information and technology.
After watching a YouTube video on open-source software, these discussion questions can help students process and understand what they learned.
4.15 The student will give examples of computing technologies that have changed the world and express how those technologies influence, and are influenced by, cultural practices.Students will use this printable to:Research India’s culture and society. (No more than 10 min)Research India’s traditional education system. (No more than 10 min)Develop a plan to use technology (computing devices and internet) to provide online classes to children in India. For this assignment, do not worry about cost. What cultural and societal elements from India would you need to include in online classes for students in India?
Out of My Mind is a chapter book that I read aloud to my upper elementary students. It is about a girl named Melody that has an amazing memory. She is extremely bright, but is unable to communicate verbally. She was born with cerebral palsy which affected her speech and her ability to move and function without the use of a wheelchair and communication board. She is very limited in what she can express and do, and for that reason, people treat her as if she is not smart or capable of learning.
Students will follow along with the slide deck to discuss changes in technology, as well as changes to the U.S. Constitution. Students will then work to correctly place statements in a Venn diagram. With extra time, students will do a Roll & Read activity with Plus Plus or Pixel blocks.
Students will be immersed in a part of each of the 5 ancient civilizations and learn about either architecture or daily life using a VR headset and Youtube App.
Compare architecture of three different civilizations by visiting the Great Wall in China, pyramids in Egypt, and the Parthenon in Greece and discuss how these visits are so different from our ability to compare them 3 decades ago when technology wasn’t as advanced.
Students will be creating models of the houses of the three American Indian Cultures. Using the Templates provided and the 3Doodlers you will be creating the shelter and other characteristics of the cultures. The 3Doodlers start+ are for ages as low as 6. What better way to remember the types of houses than making them!
Dive into the exciting world of augmented reality while exploring how to conserve our natural resources. Get your creative juices flowing as you design your very own natural resource drawing and bring it to life using AR technology and apps.
1st grade students often struggle to relate to the experiences of others, to help them empathize with how obstacles make it harder to reach goals, they will work together to build towers out of various types of building toys. Each group will have an obstacle they must overcome, just like Maggie L. Walker overcame her obstacles and became a wonderful example of a good citizen! Students will learn and explore how to be a good digital citizen using internet safety.
Students will conduct an experiment to see how light affects plant growth. The teacher and students will use a computer to analyze and display the data. The class will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using computers to evaluate data.
Students will be learning about what a pixel is and how they have changed over the years. We will then tie this into how the ancient Greeks created the Olympics and how the Olympics have changed.
This 2 day lesson will start off by teaching the students about various materials we use in the classroom and how we can save on waste in the classroom. We will learn about some of the things we use to write and how over time that has changed. This will then take the students into day 2 of the lesson where they will learn about recycling and the importance of taking care of our Earth whether it be by taking care of various materials in our classroom to learning about things that we can recycle to help the Earth’s landfills with waste.
Students will be using Google scholar and learning ways to research using these technology topics.
The students will collect data about their classmates on screen time, grades, and amount of sleep. They will then organize and represent this data using scatterplots to see if they have a positive, negative, or no relationship to each other.
Students will use the internet to research how the internet, and computing, and innovation have influenced change in the world of Aviation for the past 50 years. They will use the information gathered to create a slide presentation of their findings. Students will give an oral presentation of their research findings.
How do you think screen-related distractions affect your productivity? How can we investigate this? In this lesson, we will design an investigation to answer this question. We will collect and analyze data to give us a better understanding of our experience.
Students will get a real life look at ways to be responsible online.
First, students will listen to the read-alouds listed above over several days. Students will begin to be able to identify and sort items according to needs vs. wants. The students will have to choose items carefully and responsibly in order to ensure that their wants are not getting in the way of their needs. Next, students will listen to the “Needs and Wants Explained - Facts for Kids” video. Students will then complete an interactive Word Wall sort by sorting needs and wants into their correct categories. Then, the teacher will give each student a scenario (Example: I need you to collect 3 needs and 1 want). Students will bring them to the carpet where students will sort their chosen items into two groups (needs vs wants). Teachers and students will discuss the sorted items and allow students to explain the reasoning behind their choices. Finally, students will discuss why we need to be responsible with our choices when we use technology.
