The Egyptian Barter Game is a lesson designed to get students active in the classroom while learning about Egyptian culture and the barter system. It is a card game (using homemade cards and other materials) which should be played more than once so students can consider their strategies used to barter their "haves" for their "needs." It should not be students' first introduction to Egyptian culture but should come after some exposure to what life was like in ancient Egypt. Addresses Virginia SOL: HSS.2.9, HSS.3.2, HSS.3.8, HSS.3.9

Use a series of interactive models and games to explore electrostatics. Learn about the effects positive and negative charges have on one another, and investigate these effects further through games. Learn about Coulomb's law and the concept that both the distance between the charges and the difference in the charges affect the strength of the force. Explore polarization at an atomic level, and learn how a material that does not hold any net charge can be attracted to a charged object. Students will be able to:

I created this partner game to give my students practice estimating sums and differences. This game supports sol 3.3a, estimate and determine the sum or difference of two whole numbers. Before playing the game, students should have already studied rounding. In this game, students take turns flipping over four cards and rounding the number. Then, they add the rounded numbers to find the sum or subtract the rounded numbers to find the difference.

I created this game to use in a place value lesson. This activity supports sol 3.1a, read, write, and identify the value of each digit in a six-digit whole number, with and without models. Before this lesson, my students identified digits, placement of commas to form large numbers, and read numbers written in standard form. The focus of this lesson is to read numbers written in standard form and word form. The teacher gives the students a card with a standard form or word form number. They travel the room to find their partner. Then, students tell the class how they know they are partners. Student talk is incorporated into the lesson. This is vital and allows students to develop thoughts and convey ideas about what they are learning.

I created this game to give my students hands on practice with counting money. Counting money is a skill that is used daily in real life, so it is necessary that all students master the skill. This activity supports sol 3.6a, determine the value of a collection of bills and coins whose total value is $5.00 or less. Before playing this game, students should be able to recognize coins and know the values of each. This game has four recording sheets so you can differentiate instruction based on the needs of your students. Students play with a partner to flip cards, write the number under each column, and put dollars/coins on the work mat to count. While students play the game, I walk around to help students as needed. By doing this, I can assess and remediate with those students who need extra help.

I created this game as a review for my students. It’s an engaging way to practice sol 3.2a, name and write fractions (proper and improper) and mixed numbers represented by a model, sol 3.2b, represent fractions and mixed numbers with models and symbols, and sol 3.5, add and subtract fractions. In this 5-round game, students work in small groups cooperatively. After each round is completed, the student takes the recording sheet to the teacher to be checked. Students shoot a small ball into a trash can, laundry basket, or bucket from lines taped on the floor to earn points for their team. Team games such as this one motivates my students to learn and helps them take responsibility for their learning.

These lessons demonstrate how a good understanding of mitosis, meiosis and fertilization and a basic understanding of the roles of DNA and proteins can provide the basis for understanding genetics. Important genetics concepts for students to learn are summarized and multiple learning activities are suggested to help students understand Punnett squares, pedigrees, dominant/recessive alleles, X-linked recessive alleles, incomplete dominance, co-dominance, test crosses, independent assortment, genetic linkage, polygenic inheritance, etc. This overview provides links to suggested activities which include hands-on simulation and laboratory activities, analysis of class data, review games and discussion activities and questions.

This game helps students to enjoy reviewing genetics vocabulary. Each card in the deck has a target vocabulary word and two related taboo words that the student may not use when giving clues so the other students in his or her small group can guess the target word. Many students have trouble learning the substantial new vocabulary required for biology, and this game lets students have fun while reinforcing their understanding of key terms.
