This resource links to a rotation-based "game" created by NOAA and the National Weather Service. I've also attached a 5E formatted lesson plan giving some background and introduction. The activity should take about one class period, and there is a point-of-view writing activity included as extension. You'll need to print out (and laminate for durability) the station cards and labels. Be sure to print the student recording sheet as well.

This is a set of two, one-page problems about the sizes of moons in the solar system. Learners will use fractions to compare the sizes and distances of Jupiter's moons. Options are presented so that students may learn about the Juno mission through a NASA press release or by viewing a NASA eClips video [6 min.] about the creation of graphic of the 88 largest objects in our solar system. This activity is part of the Space Math multi-media modules that integrate NASA press releases, NASA archival video, and mathematics problems targeted at specific math standards commonly encountered in middle school.

This activity incorporates a lesson on online safety with a whole-class review of astronomy. Students will review what is personal vs public information and the dangers of posting private information online. Then they will go around the room to examine astronomy posters. They’ll be hunting for personal details that WOULD NOT be safe for an individual to include in a public forum, like posters or online. They’ll also be looking for key ideas that they covered during their astronomy course.

This lesson incorporates computer science with an interesting enrichment topic for Environmental Science II, Astronomy - Dark Matter. Students will be able to visualize WHY scientists believe that 85% of matter in our universe is not the same as what we are made of. Using simple orbital speed kits, your class can combine their data and analyze it to see what happens to orbital speed with increasing distance from the barycenter of a galaxy. They can add mass to the center to represent dark matter and see how that increases the orbital speed - just like what Vera Rubin discovered in the 1960s.

This 2 day lesson will start off by teaching the students about various materials we use in the classroom and how we can save on waste in the classroom. We will learn about some of the things we use to write and how over time that has changed. This will then take the students into day 2 of the lesson where they will learn about recycling and the importance of taking care of our Earth whether it be by taking care of various materials in our classroom to learning about things that we can recycle to help the Earth’s landfills with waste.

This gives students two different things to do with what they have learned and read about Storms and precipitation. Not only will students have a good time using stamps but they can also take what they read and interpret it into a graph. This is a very vital skill throughout school all the way up until 12 grade.

This is a review lesson intended to be used at the end of the unit on Oceans. Students work in teams to complete activities that will result in the creation of a code or password. The codes will open a series of four locks to open a large lock box. A smaller lock box with a more difficult password can be solved to reveal a prize. This lesson also incorporates the topic of cybersecurity using password safety.

This lesson will track the weather for a week. It will get students actively engaged in checking the weather. This will help teach responsibility as a child can prepare how to dress for the weather as well. Students will learn great science vocabulary as well as spark an interest that may lead to further weather investigations.
