PAGE ACSE - Investigating Probability
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Have you ever thought about how we determine the likelihood of certain events happening? Computational models are mathematical representations of real-world phenomena, while simulations mimic real-world processes. In this lesson, we will discuss computational models and simulations, and then perform a simulation to determine if the mathematical probability of getting heads when we flip a coin matches what we find in real life.

First, students will listen to the read-alouds listed above over several days.  Students will begin to be able to identify and sort items according to needs vs. wants.  The students will have to choose items carefully and responsibly in order to ensure that their wants are not getting in the way of their needs.  Next, students will listen to the “Needs and Wants Explained - Facts for Kids” video.  Students will then complete an interactive Word Wall sort by sorting needs and wants into their correct categories. Then, the teacher will give each student a scenario (Example:  I need you to collect 3 needs and 1 want).  Students will bring them to the carpet where students will sort their chosen items into two groups (needs vs wants).  Teachers and students will discuss the sorted items and allow students to explain the reasoning behind their choices.   Finally, students will discuss why we need to be responsible with our choices when we use technology.
