The purpose of this document is to highlight standard nine of the 2020 Music Standards of Learning for choral music. This standard in all grade levels relates connecting music content, skills, and processes to career options, college opportunities, and the 21st Century workplace. Teachers and curriculum specialists can use this document to plan a sequence of instruction for grades 6-12 that prepares students for career, college, and workplace connections in music education.

The Three Little Pigs is told orally with pictures only and the children are asked to make predictions based on text features.  At the end, the children are asked to compare the houses from the story to where they live. The children will enjoy a puppet show of the Three Little Pigs.  Teachers can use this video to teach a sequence of events and story elements. 

 Citizen science is known as the collection and analysis of data relating to the natural world by members of the public. Those participating in citizen science projects and activities are not professional scientists; rather, this collaborative research is done by everyday people in a wide variety of settings around the world to help answer questions that scientists can’t answer by themselves. This lesson remixes an original lesson created by Govind Lingam entitled "Teach Design: Mood Board." In this movement-inclusive lesson, students will conduct an art-based anticipatory activity that introduces them to the close-reading process with a special emphasis on mood and imagery. They will then transition to a close-reading of a small passage from Jekyll & Hyde in order to demonstrate how our understanding of a passage changes with each new read as well as to gain a clearer understanding of how specific details function in a larger narrative.

Fourth grade students are learning about the five geographic regions of Virginia and their characteristics. These comprehension “mix-ups” are a great way to monitor students’ understanding of the content along with checking reading comprehension.

Inform students that as they read the paragraphs, there is ONE word in each paragraph that is a “mix-up” (it is incorrect).

Teachers can choose to do these multiple ways in their classroom:
Whole group - teacher reads aloud the paragraph and students find the “mix-up”
Small group - the teacher works with a small group of students, modeling fluent reading and finding the mix-up
Students work in partners

The Constitution acted like a colossal merger, uniting a group of states with different interests, laws, and cultures. Under America’s first national government, the Articles of Confederation, the states acted together only for specific purposes. The Constitution united its citizens as members of a whole, vesting the power of the union in the people. Without it, the American Experiment might have ended as quickly as it had begun.
